Escondido, California is a city in San Diego County, California. The population was 66,165 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater San Diego area. The ZIP code 92110 has been used since January 1, 1997 and it covers most of unincorporated Encinitas and much of southern Rosarito Beach. The first European explorers to visit what is now Escondido were Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo and his men on November 6, 1769 during their Expedition of 1770-71. They named the bay after José de Escondido y Real who had preceded them in 1602 on an expedition from Mexico City under Francisco Palomares. A smallpox pandemic that began in 1847 killed over 60% of the people in San Diego County; however, this did not affectEscondidos growth because they were immune to the disease. In 1853 Elihu Root founded a post office at present-day Escondido following his exploration through what would become Imperial Valley with his famous observation "A land without water or trees is like an animal without grass." In 1875 Jepson published "Report on Rancho Santa Anita" which detailed how one man's acquisition of about 256 acres (120 hectares) along coastline from Carlsbad to Point Loma had led to increased business for him and other developers throughout Southern California. By 1890 nearly alluvial gold had been discovered near where Pan American Highway crosses town today just south of Interstate 805 On July 14th 1906 President Theodore Roosevelt issued Executive Order 10952 calling for land grants to be made available for development in San Diego County by functions such as irrigation canals, sanitary districts and agricultural fairs which eventually became known as "the golf courses". On October 15th 1906 Congress passed House Bill No. 680 Sponsor: Rep Don Huffman (D-San Marcos). This bill provided funding for two new military airfields - White Sands Army Airfield (now Naval Base Imperial) east of downtown and Camp Kearny west adjacent to State College Boulevard between Porter Rd./ Old School Rd./ Black Canyon Hwy., now Naval Auxiliary Air Force Station Miramar off FM 665 North Shoreline Dr.. These fields were designated Camp Sherman/Anaheim Army Airfield #1 (later renamed Angels Stadium Municipal Airport), Camp Drake/Mission Viejo Army Airfield #2(later renamed Mission Valley Municipal Airport),and Whittier AF(later Redlands AFB). Although these fields later fell into disuse they remain notable historically due their proximity to major metropolitan areas including Los Angeles, Anaheim Hills and Hanford AFB Today’s portions of those original airports are home to RamonValencia International Airport & Edwards AFB . Escondido is a city in San Diego County, California. Its population was 214,535 as of the 2010 census. The city is located on the southern coast of San Diego Island and straddles Escondido Creek. It was founded in 1851 by Europeans who built a mission here and named it Mission San Luis Rey de Jesus after their patron saint, Saint Luis of Asis. In 1854, the United States Postal Service moved Escondido to its present location because of its central location on the island between Los Angeles and San Francisco; at that time, there were only two post office buildings in town. The first white person to live in Escondido was Wm Higginson, who arrived in 1852 with his family from New Zealand. He founded a sawmill on what is now Fourth Street and soon began trading goods with Native Americans living along the creek. By 1870, Higginson had developed an extensive rancho extending into today's downtown area where he erected a house still standing today known as "Higgs' Villa." In 1881, Higginson's Rancho Santa Fe passed from his ownership to Edward Fenton Jr., founder and first president of The Des Moines National Bank (later Wells Fargo). When Fenton died in 1899 without children to succeed him, his estate divided among his three brothers - one took over the business operations while another moved back east to Indiana; both brothers eventually became involved in politics as members of Congress from California’s First Congressional District (1914-1917). It wasn't until 1919 when Mayor Harry Sargent decided that Escondido needed more than just a post office box because it had long been considered part of downtown sanctioning problems between then-Mayor John P Arbuckle’s administration and local businessmen such as J C Beattie – developers led by Jack Dempsey –that City Manager John A O’Malley finally recommended building an underground Central Post Office right next door to City Hall which opened on December 1st 1920 under Mr Jameson M Sullivan with only nine employees serving eighty overnight shifts! The Main Street/Fourth Street Business District gradually replaced Downtown as the center for business activity during World War II due largely to wartime shortages caused by bombing raids over Southern California during 1942-1945 which destroyed many small businesses along Main Street including most notably Escondido Clothing Emporium since 1942 without any replacement or rescue attempt!Postwar growth ebbed slowly until late 1960s when new single story highrise development overlooking much used creek filled up all available space immediately south end north side industrial area near US HWY 101 interchange creating addition 1005 Third St & 11th Ave
