The United States Air Force has a rich history in Eureka, California. The first airbase in the city was established on December 8, 1941 when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. The USAAF played a critical role in enabling America to win World War II and postwar peace. In 1947, Eureka became the home of the USAF’s Third Air Force headquarters. This facility was an important landmark during the Cold War because it provided strategic bombers and fighter aircraft to support Operation Crossroads, which was America’s effort to defeat Soviet Union forces in Central Asia. In 1955, the USAF announced that it would close its Second Air Force headquarters in Sacramento and move its command center there. This decision helped stimulate economic development around Eureka and contribute to its becoming an attractive location for military installations. In 1967, after several years of planning, First Aerospace Division opened at Bolling AFB adjacent to Eureka Airport. This new facility served as both an air traffic control center for surrounding communities and a research laboratory focused on advanced aerospace technologies. Since then, more than fifty thousand people have worked at First Aerospace Division; many of them continue to play an important role today within the USAF through their jobs at our Headquarters annex or subordinate facilities worldwide. One such project is creating a downtown district that will include cultural attractions like theaters and museums as well as residential areas for locals and tourists alike. The city also plans to host events throughout year that focus on its unique history including street festivals, music concerts and more."

The city's infrastructure—including its water system and schools—was improved in response to its role as the state's seat of government. Over time, however, some residents began to feel that their city wasn't being given due credit for its achievements. In 1870 they founded the Sierra Club to promote public spiritedness and environmental awareness among Californians; this led to increased development around Eureka and other coastal towns until World War II ended those efforts altogether.
