Eureka is located in the California state of California. It was founded on December 3, 1851 by Miles Johnson and John Teller, two of the founders of The New School for Social Research in New York City. Eureka was named after the Greek goddess Athena because she represents “the knowledge that a better way can be found.” The town's first post office opened on December 14, 1851. On January 1, 1853, Eureka became one of the towns in Contra Costa County when it was split from Alameda County. The town experienced a rapid growth during its early years thanks to its location at the junction of wagon roads and sea vessels coming into and leaving San Francisco Bay. In 1859, Eureka cracked the world's first steamboat navigation through San Francisco Bay - an event that helped spur development in maritime transportation throughout the area. By 1862, there were over 100 businesses operating in Eureka; including 12 banks and six hotels. On October 15, 1863, while under construction on what would become125th Street (now Donahue Avenue), a fire destroyed much of downtown Eureka –a loss that impacted business activity significantly for several weeks. Despite this setback, overall development continued apace with new buildings being erected throughout 1865-1866 as business improved markedly. A Carnegie library was built in 1870 and became one of America's most popular libraries; serving as a center for learning about social issues during the late 19th century In 1886-87 local farmers successfully lobbied to have city water restrictions placed on their properties within city limits - resulting in increased agricultural production around town which led to more jobs available for locals . Between 1888 and 1893 new streets were laid out gridfashion throughout downtown with commercial areas being developed near eastern river docks - attracting merchants looking to escape congestion along Market Street
