In 1847, while on a journey from Sacramento to Eureka, California, George Vancouver saw an ad in the local paper for "a man's best friend." He hired a wagon and driver to take him to the town of Goldsborough and picked up the man named John Reed. They were both lost in thought as they rode along. As they neared the geographic landmark known as Trinity Peaks, Reed suggested stopping at a small cabin for dinner. When they got there, Vancouver found he was alone with Reed and decided to take him on as his new comrade. The two men continued their ride together until they came upon another settlement called Fortunato Creek. There, Vancouver took Reed into his home and introduced him to his wife Sarah. Both women welcomed Reed warmly and he soon became part of their lives. It wasn't until later that Vancouver realized that he had made a mistake by taking on such an inexperienced companion - John Reed had no business being out there on his own in the remote countryside! Despite having some mishaps along the way (Reed became sick after eating mushrooms), Vancouver managed to make it back to civilization alive and founded what is now known as Eureka County in 1853 after discovering gold deposits nearby. In 1868, when gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill, Eureka became officially incorporated with City Hall located just down the street from where Captain George Vancouver had first set eyes upon the place back in 1792! From then until 1906 - when it merged with San Francisco -Eureka was one of America's most thriving cities full of culture and innovation! In 1853, Eureka became the first location in California to be reached by railroad after being surveyed by Colonel George C. Boggs and Captain John Sutter. The town was founded on December 7, 1852 by General James Shields and his brother-in-law, William Fenton. By 1860, there were over 100 businesses in Eureka with 1,500 residents. In 1871, the town's population had grown to 4,000 when it was incorporated as a city. In 1865, American General Ulysses S. Grant adopted Eureka as his headquarters during his journey from New York City to visit the gold fields in California. As part of its promotional materials, General Grant sketched out what would become Eureka's downtown core on top of a hill overlooking the lake where he had first noticed potential gold deposits while visiting nearby Gold Rush towns such as Fillmore and Stockton.
