Eureka, California (pronounced "EE-uh-rek") is the most famous city in California and one of its largest metropolitan areas. The population of Eureka peaked at 69,545 in 1990, but has since declined to around 53,000 today. However, the city remains an important center for technology and business development throughout the state and nation. The first Europeans to visit what is now Eureka were Spanish traders seeking trade goods with inland Native Americans. In 1824, Captain George Vancouver explored the region as part of his expedition searching for a Northwest Coast route to China. After landing on North Island on July 29th of that year, he named it San Francisco de Asís after General José Joaquín Cámpora y Valdés who had led British forces against Spanish forces at Palo Alto in 1824. In 1846, gold was discovered near the town by prospectors led by Hennepin County Treasurer John Sutter. With news of this gold discovery spreading rapidly through Northern California (and other parts of America), a rush began to find and mine the new resource. On November 16th of that year, three men - Jedediah Smith (a member ofCaptain Vancouver's expedition), Manuel Nieto and Antonio Vallejo - set out from Sacramento on horseback to explore what became known as Gold Rush country north of Sacramento Bayou. After days hiking over difficult terrain they located payable deposits totaling $8 per ounce in local quartz reefs." sporadic mining operations continued until 1861 when Measure #7 was passed allowing mineral production companies such as United States Land Company (USLC) to begin extracting gold from hillsides along Pyramid Hill Road northeast of downtown Eureka beginning Fall 1861." The site where modern day Eureka stands was originally inhabited by indigenous people some 10 miles westward from present day Sacramento City limits when Startona Chief Trader Kappai arrived there about September 9th 1775 en route betweennative villages at today’s American River junction east side about 12 miles due southwesterly from present day Lodi area under jurisdiction of Lagunitas Tribe during territory acquired by Mexican Empire Septembered 25 1781 pursuant to treaty negotiated at Guadalupe Hidalgo Febuary 6 1800 between Spain pueblo de Las Vegas y Mexico ceded by France Dec 12 1800; subsequently Claimed & claimed again Aug 1st 1803 by United States under Treaty with Mexico City signed Oct 15 1800 which provided: “That all title whatsoever held or claimed within any Territory acquisitiond or gainedby either Spain or Mexico before our independence shall forever be subject unto us & our successors ammounting compensation having been previously agreed upon between both parties”). This area lying northwest along present day Highway 101 corridor from eastside Indian Reservation boundaries upriver past American River junction then generally southeast including parts now comprising eastern unincorporated portion called Rancho Seco thence extending southeasterly into Contra Costa County being bounded on WSW corner Alameda County line by Yorba Linda Park Preserve thence easterly limitethng NNW corner Santa Clara County line thereto adjoining Livermore Valley; including lands now included hereinwithin said park Preserve were enclosed according to survey taken Feb 21st 1853 By Ulysses S Grant . . . ." On January 7th 1863 Californian troops landed at Point Reyes Peninsula northwest of Eureka in order participate in Ulysses S Grant's Overland Expedition intended ultimately duty as protector/guardian over Transcontinental Railroad construction project

In 1903, Major-General John J Pershing presentedLieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer with a white horse as a gift. Custer was killed in action during the battle of Little Bighorn on July 6, 1876. Pershing ordered that all Marines receive a white horse as part of their insignia for life. Today, marines continue to send gifts to civilians and troops throughout the world in commemoration of those who have served our country. Eureka, California was founded in 1849 by John C. Fremont. It is located on the Central Coast of California and became a city in 1856. The town was named for a moment of enlightenment that occurred when American Revolutionary War veteran James K. Polk happened to be passing through the area on his way to Mexico City. When he realized that he had discovered an unguessed gold mine, he named the area Eureka after the Greek word euripides meaning "the discovery" or "the found." The first post office was established in Eureka on July 29, 1849. The first store opened in November of that year and soon there were several other businesses operating within the town limits. By 1850, Eureka had a population of about 150 people and it began to grow rapidly due to its strategic location near Gold Rush era mines and hotels. In 1853, Mayor John Witherspoon created a water system which enabled residents to irrigate their crops more effectively. This helped provide food for local merchants while also increasing growth rates throughout the town over time. In 1861, following Lincoln's election as president, Mr. Fremont made a speech at Ridgefield Park (now part of downtown) promoting Ulysses S Grant's candidacy for president because he thought that Grant would be better equipped than any other candidate to solve America's problems at home and abroad; this event is generally considered to have started America’s Civil War years with significant consequences both domestically and internationally. In 1865, during the final days of the American Civil War, General Ulysses S Grant ordered General Order No 2 (known as “The Proclamation from Cairo”), which announced military emancipation of all slaves in all United States territories west of Mexico City except Oregon Territory-allowing these slaves free under certain conditions-to take effect immediately without further notice or compensation from those slave owners who still held their slaves! This event helped spark what is known as Black Reconstruction in America which lasted until 1955 when President Franklin D Roosevelt signed Executive Order 8802 which ended segregation in education across America based on race! Eureka experienced rapid growth once World War II began but slowly declined thereafter due largely to cultural reasons such as declining attendance at local high schools and disdain for suburban lifestyles among many centrists who saw Eureka as becoming increasingly out-of-touch with modem times patterns along with social unrest caused by partisanship between rival political parties during wartime periods especially during McCarthyism era (1948–1957). However, recent revitalization efforts by city officials including passage of Measure T (2018) authorizing $145 million in new public funding towards redevelopment projects within existing boundaries has led to renewed hope for Eureka’s future even if some challenges remain including dwindling employment opportunities outside traditional retail sectors; however overall there has been continued productivity growth averaging 3% per annum since 2010 despite mixed housing market conditions often resulting in increased homelessness/unsustainable living situations inside older buildings typical of most coastal communities experiencing similar levels or worse displacement trends over recent decades%.
