In 1853, the United States first deployed military forces to California in order to protect its citizens from Mexican efforts to annex the state. The U.S. Marines were stationed at Fort Point on Golden Gate Island and served as a deterrent against further Mexican invasions. As a result of their deployment during World War II, many Eureka residents are likely familiar with both Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton (now known as Offutt Air Force Base) and Navy Yard Eureka (now known as De Anza Coast Guard Station).
Eureka, California is an incorporated city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 16,715 at the 2010 census. It lies on the west coast of Silicon Valley and is adjacent to San Jose. In 1846, two brothers named John C. Fremont and George W. Dixon founded the town of Eureka on Nob Hill in what is now downtown Eureka. They named it after a sound they heard while prospecting for gold near Yerba Buena Island in 1845. In 1848, Captain Francis Drake discovered gold on the mainland; this led to spur development around Eureka because new sources of wealth were available for entrepreneurs looking for new opportunities. On January 29, 1868, Mayor James Wolkstedt issued an official proclamation proclaiming Eureka as the capital of California because it had been selected as the site for a new state government. The city continued to grow rapidly until 1906 when World War I caused a decline in business activity andidents left for better opportunities elsewhere in California. In 1922, Eureka became part of San Francisco County when it was created from parts of Marin and Santa Clara counties.
Eureka, California was founded on April 6, 1847 by Michael H. Gold Rush pioneers as the town of Gold Beach on the shore of San Francisco Bay. The name refers to an incident in 1846 when a group of men went ashore to find gold and were met by a local resident, Tom Folsom, who helped them find their way back to the ship and named them Eureka after the Greek goddess of discovering new things. The first post office in Eureka opened in 1850. In 1863, the United States Post Office Department moved from Sacramento to Eureka because there was not enough space in Sacramento for all the mail arriving from California.
