The Army of Northern California was established at Fort Yuma on October 16, 1847, and soon after received orders to construct a road from Sacramento to Stockton. At the same time that General John C. In 1862–1863 Captain George Fenton commandeered the old adobe mission house on North Beach for use as a barracks for troops stationed at Fort Mason while still under construction adjacent to what is now State Route 17A across downtown from City Hall. The fort saw service during both Civil War and World War I before being decommissioned in 1923; it has been used intermittently ever since as an agricultural research center by UC Davis’ Department of Food Science & Technology (now UC Davis Agricultural Research Center). In 1865–1866 Major Edwin Purdy took possession of Fort Mason and built his own red brick bastion-style armory next door to Red Bluff Barracks; this building remains standing today within City Hall boundaries. From 1865 until 1870 there was also a battery located atop Mount Davidson between Masonic Temple Complex and State Street; this Battery No 2 fell into disuse by 1907 however remnants remain today within Masonic Temple Complex boundaries near Race Course Rd./Highway 101A exit ramp off Interstate 5 southbound). In 1865, American Civil War veteran Captain John Sutter discovered gold at Gold Hill and began to mine there. By 1870, Eureka had become a major mining center with over 20 mines operations operating out of it. By 1881-1882, over $1 million had been invested inmining hereabouts and the population had grown to over 2 500 residents. The discovery of oil shale near Winton Points spelled doom for Eureka but entrepreneur George Eastman managed to bring production back up to full swing by 1907 using hydraulic fracturing (fracking). Today much of that oil shale still remains recoverable through fracking although some sites are off limits due to seismic activity
