The United States Navy deployed a gift to the city of Eureka, California in 1897. The USS Constitution was stationed at the naval station in San Francisco and on October 15th, 1897, the ship received a shipment of flowers from London. The flowers were brought by Captain Alfred Thayer Mahan who served as Commodore of the harbor at Eureka. The captain took delivery of many bouquets over the next few days and put them inside an old trunk that he had stored at his home. He then took them to one of the stores near the navy station and set them free for people in town. Some of those who received these gifts were Mayor George Wickersham, Captains John Sutter and Halleck Richardson, Mrs. John Wickersham, General Folsom, Edwin Stoughton and Drs. William Cullen Bryant and Edward Condon. On October 22nd, 1897, when it was learned that there would be no war with Spain that year and mail service would be resumed between California and New York City after a brief interruption due to hostilities overseas, scores of people gathered at Government House in downtown Eureka to receive their bouquets from Captain Mahan. Among those present was Mrs. John Wickersham who accepted a bouquet from Captain Richardson on behalf of her husband-in-law General Folsom who also displayed some unusual knickknacks on loan from Lord Northcliffe’s Oriental Trading Company which he managed in Eureka until his death in 1894. After World War I (1914-18), America's military involvement decreased while Naval installations closed around America; however this didn't mean that Navy ships stopped gifting roses or other plants! On September 25th 1947 an old battleship USS Missouri arrived at Naval Station Alameda California dock for an official visit lasting three days including visits by Rear Admiral Thomas Jinks (Commander USN Pacific Fleet) aboard USS Missouri (CVN 66) during which time they inspected damage suffered during World War II off Japan coast; Member nations represented included United Kingdom ( Destroyer Flotilla 2 HMS Cornwallis ), Canada ( HMCS Niagara ) , Australia ( HMAS Vampire ), Netherlands Antilles ( Hollandia ), Spain/Portugal/Brasil ( Santa Clara de Rosario ) , Denmark/Norway/Icelandic Coastguard Ship Fram . Many members disembarked aboard USS Missouri for lunch ashore before returning onboard Missouri for another day's visit ending on Sunday September 28th 1947 with Commander Jinks making an inspection tour aft main deck promenadedeck . Eureka is a small town in the Central Valley of California, located about 120 miles (190 km) south of Fresno. The population was 2,055 at the 2010 census. Eureka's name comes from the Greek word ἔυρακα (), meaning "a place where gold is found." Gold was first discovered in 1848 in what is now Eureka County by prospectors John Sutter and James Hutton. In 1853, J.D. Polk discovered an additional 10 ounces (280 g) of gold on the same property as Sutter and Hutton's find. Goldmining became a major industry in California during the mid-19th century; over 1 million metric tons (1,500 t) of gold were mined in Nevada and Oregon between 1858 and 1865. In 1868, following news of discoveries atsysite and metaebonite near Sacramento, Governor Edmunds ordered a survey to be made of all valuable mineral localities within 7 miles (11 km). On September 9, 1868, Samuel Gompers proposed to congress that Ulysses S. Grant should become acting governor because “the public mind has been so unsettled by events lately taking place” around San Francisco Bay Area towns such as San Jose and Oakland that “no one knows just what course ought to be pursued with reference to them”—an indication thatgold mining would resume given the new availability of resources. However, Grant vetoed Gompers' proposal instead appointing Prentiss Goodwin instead to take charge of mining operations in Northern California due to his ties with chairman Jay Cooke & Co., who had interests in mines throughout Northern California but not yet eastward into Sonoma Countywhere metallurgical production began later that year under American Enterprise Mining Company president Daniel Drake When General William Tecumseh Sherman arrived at Corcoran Barracks on October 17–1869 for his march across Southern California he noticed an area stretching north from Santa Clara Valley northwest past Yuba Cityto Auburn then northeast along Adobe Hills until it reached Eureka Creek whereupon he halted his march due to poor water supplies (). Sherman called a conference with top military leaders including Admiral George Dewey () who agreed that Californians needed more time before they could get their hands on some silver ore before moving westward into Sonoma County (). Some elements within Sherman's 6th Army group wanted him continue southwest towards Temecula while others wanted him turn back northeast towards Sacramento (). Ultimately both plans were shelved when better opportunities occurred elsewhere

Eureka is a small town in California that was the site of an important scientific discovery on July 16, 1854. George Washington Goodwin and his team discovered gold coins at the mouth of Pigeon Creek in what is now Eureka. This discovery led to the Gold Rush in California and also inspired many technological advances. The town quickly grew into a major center for mining, agriculture, and science. The area now known as Eureka was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. The first Europeans to visit the area were Missionaries from San Francisco who named it Piegone after a nearby peak. In 1839, prospectors discovered quartzite veins near where Eureka would later be founded. This led to the start of the Gold Rush which lasted until 1850. During this time, over 100 thousand people rushed to try and find lucrativeuggets of gold. Many buildings and structures were built in Eureka during this time including the Post Office building which still stands today (now used as a museum).
