Navy ships have been a part of the California Coast Guard for more than 150 years. They serve in both the military and maritime communities. In 1851, the first navy ship to be stationed in Eureka was USS Constitution. The navy has also donated vessels to the Coast Guard, most notably the USS United States (CG-1) which was donated in 1961. Another gift from the navy was the USS John F Kennedy (CV-22) which arrived in Eureka in 1984. This ship is credited with saving lives on 4 occasions during Operation Neptune’s Spear when it participated in aerial refueling missions over Afghanistan. The California Navy Museum is located on Pier 21b inside of Fort Point State Park across from city hall. It features exhibits about naval history, technology and operations dating back to 1851 when USS Constitution sailed into town as part of Commodore James Cook's pioneering effort to secure California's coastline for Spain and America.
