In the early 1900s, when Fairfield was first settled in the area, there were no military installations. However, over time, the town began to grow and develop as a busy agricultural center. The need for an army post soon became apparent, and in 1907 the Army established a small detachment at Fort Sill on Tulsa Bayou. The garrison was manned by soldiers from neighboring Oklahoma City and Fort Worth. The Army withdrew its military forces from Fairfield in 1951 and transferred all of its functions to Camp Pendleton on San Diego Bay. However, because of its close proximity to San Diego County and international borders, Fairfield continued to maintain a small military presence through the years until 1997 when all enlisted personnel were eliminated and all active duty troops were pulled back from the city. Today, Fort Sill is still home to U.S.Army Garrison California-Fort Sill (USAG CA-Fort Sill). As part of this installation’s history, it is noteworthy that Gift History Day is celebrated annually on November 1st in commemoration of United StatesArmy Soldiers who have given their lives for our country throughout history [1]. The Fairfield Army Depot Arsenal began operating in 1892 and was the first military arsenal in California. It served as a depot for artillery, cavalry and infantry troops until it closed in 1978. The site is now home to the California State University-Fresno Extension's Museum of Art and History.

After the war ended, many of Fairfield's residents shifted their focus towards day-to-day living and development instead of preserving their old mill buildings or heritage. In 1821, John Sutter founded the city of Sacramento on an empty lot near what is now downtown Fairfield. The city grew rapidly, and by 1848 it had a population of over 120 residents. In 1851, the California Gold Rush began, andFairfield became one of the most developed areas in Northern California. During this time, businesses flourished and many new homes were built. By 1865, there were over 1,500 residents in Fairfield; it was then considered a very lively town with busy streets and sidewalks. For many years after the Gold Rush ended, Fairfield remained largely rural until waves of immigrants arrived from Europe during World War II. This influx changed everything – not just because of its large numbers but also becauseFairfield had a long history as an agricultural center for multiple counties in Central California. The war brought about large-scale changes for both men and property throughout central California; however, little change took place forFairfields citizens until after World War II when they started to experience increased crime rates and social isolation due to anti-immigrant sentiment that was rampant at that time. In 1966, Mayor Marvin Weinreb proposed calling for annexation of El Sobrante into City of Sacramento due to concerns about crime rates within that community which had exploded since annexation occurred less than two years earlier (El Sobrante’s population at that point stood at roughly 508 residents). After much debate among City Council members and public opinion polls taken before and after annexation97%of El Sobrante voters voted against annexing their community into Sacramento; however Mayor Weinreb carried out his plan regardless.
