Fairfield is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 24,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kern County. Fairfield has been named one of the "Top Ten Places to Live in America" by The New York Times and Forbes magazine. The first European to see what seemed to be a new world in 1848 was John Cranch, who landed on an isolated rancho near present-day fairfield on October 3rd. He named it Rancho San Miguel de las Flores after his patron saint, St. Miguel of Amalfi Coast (or Saint Maurice). A post office called Rancho San Miguel de las Flores was established in 1852, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. Fairfield was founded on April 6, 1853 by Captain Arthur Fairfield and his wife Nancy. The town was named for Colonel James Fairfield of the United States Army, who had died in 1850. The first post office was established in 1854. The first store in Fairfield opened in 1857. In 1865, the California Central Railroad arrived in Fairfield and made it easier to get around town. The railroad also helped make Fairfield a center for agriculture, with many local businesses based around agriculture products such as hay, straw, corn and cotton. In 1919, the population of Fairfield reached 10,000 people; however, by 1930 the population had shrunk to 4,500 people because of World War II. During the war years there were a number of factories that produced munitions including Wernicke-Kirchhoff (now KKR) which manufactured radios and radar equipment; Westinghouse Electric Company which manufactured generators; General Electric Company which manufactured planes and other aircraft components; American Mfg Co., an electrical contractor; various private companies that produced goods for government agencies or military use like Litton Industries Inc., Stevens Aircraft Corp., Curtiss-Wright Aeronautical Corporation etc.; Ballinger Helicopter Service Inc.)
