The city is part of the Greater Los Angeles Area and it is bordered by Torrance to the north, Santa Clarita to the east, West Covina to the south and west, and North Hollywood to the northwest. It lies within ZIP code 91334. The history of Fairfield dates back before European arrival in what is now Ventura County; its first known inhabitants were Native American tribes who lived there for many years before being displaced by Spanish colonists in 1776. In 1847, Judge James O'Connell organized a town from land granted him by Governor Pio Pico as part of Rancho San Joaquin de la Cañada Flintridge; this town was named for General James O'Connell's military victory over Mexican forces at Rancho San Joaquin de la Cañada on October 10th, 1846. In 1853-1854, two major earthquakes struck Ventura County; one killed forty people near Moorpark and another occurred near Clear Lake; both events were felt throughout most of Southern California. A fire that started on April 15th in 1861 destroyed much of downtown Ventura and left only four buildings standing including two churches which still stand today (St. Peters Lutheran Church and Christ Episcopal Cathedral). On November 1st 1865 an Act of Congress approved site selection for what would become Fairfield taking into account: "the advantages proposed for its location...its situation on good agricultural land...the excellent example set by Valley City" On December 6th 1865 about 150 men went door-to-door offering jobs as farmers with $5 per acre (not including interest) if they agreed to move from their homes into new towns called Vallejo (now Garden Grove), Groveland (now Simi Valley), or Colusa (now Jurupa Valley). They were accepted into these towns on December 13th 1865 but did not receive water or power until after January 1st 1870 when a new dam was built upstream across Toluca Creek just north of present day Yorba Linda Boulevard. This event marked the beginning of Fairfield's rapid growth as a residential community thanks in part to efforts by Mayor John Jepsen who had seen potential development potential along Toluca Creek. The area now bounded by I-405/US 101/PCH to the east / US 101 corridor to the west / State Route 156 running northerly / Yorba Linda Boulevard has experienced little change since then other than occasional construction projects such as widening I-405 & US 101 where necessary
