Fairfield is a small town in the Sonoma County area of Northern California. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Sacramento River, about 20 miles east of Sacramento. The community was founded in 1853 by General James H. Fairchild and his wife Eliza Prentice. The first post office was established in 1854, and Fairfield became a city in 1906. In 1969, it merged with nearby Redding to form another city, Redding-Fairfield. According to the United States Census Bureau, the population of Fairfield has grown from 4,812 at the 2000 census to 6,510 at the 2010 census; this growth has been chiefly due to suburban development along Interstate 80 and county-wide redistricting which have increased its land area by about 345 square miles (1,020 km2). Located just west of downtown San Francisco on what had once been an open space called "The Prairie," Fairfield experienced initial success as a dry goods center during California's Gold Rush period (1849–51). However, after gold discoveries at Sutter's Mill and Lassen Peak in 1850s proved unsuccessful, many entrepreneurs moved into what would become known as "the new towns" around Sacramento during this time: Stockton (1852), Yuba City (1855), Danville (1856), Colusa (1857), Auburn Hills (1858), Ukiah (1859) and Merced Heights (1860). By 1863 there were over 50 such settlements scattered throughout present-day Sonoma County. The key factor that led to these towns’ success was their lack of taxes – unlike larger cities where merchants had to pay property tax on their buildings and other personalproperty%.
