In the early 1900s, Marines were stationed in Fairfield, California. The Marine Corps was founded on December 14th, 1875 in Quantico, Virginia by Major General John J. Pershing. In 1916, Fairfield became the first Marine detachment to be activated outside of the United States when it deployed to Haiti. From 1916-1918, Marines served in World War I andWorld War II as part of the USMC Expeditionary Force. They are also credited with playing a significant role during Operation Desert Storm in 1991 when they provided security for President George H.W. Bush at an outdoor event near Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In 2002-2003, Marines deployed to Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom which lasted until 2003. Since then there have been no deployments for marine forces in Iraq or Afghanistan but marines have been mobilized for exercises such as Counterterrorism Reborn and Jade Helm 15 which are taking place now throughout North America and Europe

Fairfield is a city in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 73,844 as of 2010 and it is the county seat of San Bernardino County. It is bordered by Riverside to the north and east, El Monte to the south, Fontana to the west and UTC+9 to the northwest. The history of Fairfield dates back to 1824 when José Gilroy founded a mission in what is now Fairfield. In 1846, John C. Fremont explored this area and named it "Fremont" after himself. In 1849, cattle herds were brought overland from Santa Anita Valley by Jedediah Smith and his party which included James Fenton (the first white settler in Kern County). By 1860, when Californio Mexican settlers arrived in this area they had renamed it "Fremont". In 1861, during the American Civil War, General George Armstrong Custer's army passed through this area on their way from Fort Sumter towards Sacramento. The community was destroyed by Union troops but soon rebuilt with assistance from local militia forces under command of Captain John Sutter who later became governor of California
