The National Guard in Fairfield, California has a rich history that dates back to the early days of the state. The first units were organized in 1847 and were known as the Volunteers. The Guards were authorized by Ordinance No. 9 of November 3, 1860 and the first unit was activated on December 14th, 1860. At that time there were only 350 men in Fairfield County and this number grew to 2,500 men by 1868. One of the most notable members of the Guard was Colonel John Sutter who served from 1861-1864 and 1865-1867. He is credited with making Fairfield a safe haven for Confederateilitary forces during the American Civil War. Other notable Guardsmen include Captain James Wolkentin (1866-1905), Lieutenant Colonel George Biddle (1870-1929) and Major General Lucius Noyes (1881-1945). Since its inception, the National Guard has played an important role in both local and statewide events. In 1913, it was mobilized to help suppress a May Day rally near Sacramento led by labor organizer Eugene Debs. More recently, it has been called upon to provide security for events such as presidential inaugurations or parades across California. There are currently over 160 Soldiers and Airmen assigned to serve with distinction with Fairfield’s National Guard detachment being part of Task Force 1508 stationed at Camp Pendleton in San Diego County

On December 12, 1941, the United States federal government activated the National Guard in California to provide security for President Franklin D. Roosevelt during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. The first military members of the National Guard arrived in Fairfield on December 15th and were placed under the command of Lieutenant Colonel John S. Fenton. The Fairfield City Council voted to recognize January 1st as "National Guardsmen's Day" in 1949 and annually observe that date with a parade and lunch at City Hall. In 1951, state politician George A. Romero was assassinated in Fairfield and local citizens gathered to remember him by erecting a large victory Monument near his home which still stands today. The event was also celebrated with a fireworks display over downtown Fairfield on July 4th each year since then!

It is the most populous city in Kern County and it is also one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America. The economy of Fairfield is based on agriculture, manufacturing, and services. Prior to European settlement, the area now known as Fairfield was inhabited by Native Americans including Ohlone and Hupa people. In 1847, John Sutter founded what would become Sacramento County and named it for his son-in-law, James Fairchild. The land that now includes Fairfield was part of Bear River Ranch until 1861 when it became part of Nevada Territory after United States admission into the Union. In 1872, George Hearst organized what would become Pacific Gas & Electric Company with help from his brother-in-law David Dudley Fielding and others. When he died in 1907, his estate divided among his siblings - one third went to Hearst's widow Alice Morse Peabody (later Hearst), one third went to their son Edward Mather Peabody (later Alice Newell Macy), and one third went to Harry Laughlin Calkins (later Harry Chandler Calkins). At first these shares were paid out quarterly but later they became annual payments over a period of years with interest added on top! In 1925 Pacific received federal government approval to build an electrical line running south from Fresno through Los Angeles County but due to opposition by local farmers who didn't want their fields polluted by electric lines run through their towns/cities they succeeded in blocking construction until 1930 when President Franklin D Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9982 which created regional councils authorizing public works projects within specific areas including those near metros like Los Angeles or Phoenix!
