In 1894, the Farmersville Volunteer Infantry was organized and raised in Farmersville. The regiment served in the Mexican-American War (1846-48), the American Civil War (1865-68), and World War I (1914-1918). After the war, the regiment disbanded in 1919. In 1944, a new army unit was raised in Farmersville and named after its original members – the Veterans of Foreign Wars. The VFW has been present in Farmersville since 1945. Today, there are over 100 VFW Units located throughout California. Farmersville is located in Sacramento County, California. The population was 3,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Sacramento Area. The first settlers in Farmersville were Levi and Elias De Groot who arrived in 1847. They started a small farm with four acres of land. In 1870, they sold their farm to William Hargrave and his wife Jane. They bought two more acres and began to cultivate potatoes, peas, corn, etc. In 1892, Jensie Hargrave married George Waddell and soon after moved to Farmersville with her new husband. In 1898 they raised chickens and pigs on their new property which is still in use today as a hog farm & chicken coup pen/grocery store/diner by the name of Waddell’s Chicken Shack! George Waddell also built a home which still stands today known as the Post Office Building that served as a school for children from around town until it was replaced by the current building in 1964. Mrs. Hargrave also started an ice cream parlor called “Pineapple John” which continued until 1956 when it closed because of lack of business! Today you can find remnant evidence of this early business operation located on Highway 98 just south of Slaughtertown Road where there once was an old house used as storage during Prohibition days! In 1907, farmers naturalized themselves (became American citizens) and named their village Farmersville after General Ulysses S Grant who had been president during the American Civil War (1861-1865). By 1920 there were over 100 residents living in Farmersville! There were several mills located nearby including: Clorox Company Foundry #2 (now Sunnyside Mall), First National Bank (now Foothill Credit Union), Hancock Manufactures Ltd., Southern Pacific Railroad Depot #1 now Old Richards Hardware Store - all currently inactive or abandoned but once bustling with activity these days! As Farmsville grew larger it became necessary to organize its own fire department so a public meeting was held on November 8th 1922 under the leadership of Mayor Harry Laughlin who proposed organized Fire Department No 1 consisting of six members: three men from each family farming acreage; one man from each shopkeeper; one man from other businesses within 300 feet; one member from army if needed; one woman could serve as dispatcher for seven years without pay while keeping household goods out of reach should she be needed plying her trade elsewhere outside theVillage limits On December 2nd 1922 Village Board voted unanimously to form Village Volunteer Fire Department No 1 with Captain John Purdy elected President & first Lieutenant Alonzo Whitehead serving immediately On January 6th 1923 Captain Purdy resigned due to health issues leaving Lieutenant Whitehead Acting President & First Sergeant Tom Lynch acting Deputy President
