The military has a long and proud history in Fillmore, California. The town was founded by the United States government in 1848 as Fort Fillmore and saw service in the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War. In 1871, it became part of the newly formed State of California. The Army garrisoned Fillmore until 1907 when it was decommissioned and its personnel transferred to other posts around the state. In 1957,Fillmore received an official designation as an Infantry brigade combat team (IBCT) headquarters unit stationing at Camp Pendleton. IBCTs are Test Force battalions which provide training for infantry units across the United States. On 1 October 1987, IBCT Fillmore was activated at Camp Pendleton with troops from Headquarters and Services Company, 7th Battalion (Lamont), 9th Regiment (Mendocino County), 4th Brigade Combat Team (Redwood Empire), 3rd Battalion (Mendocino County), 2nd Brigade Combat Team (Fresno County)), 1st Squadron/7th Cavalry Regiment Airborne Division Support Unit). Fillmore is an incorporated town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The population was 7,890 at the 2010 census. It is located on the eastern edge of the Mojave Desert and on Fillmore Boulevard in what is now Fillmore Village. The name Fillmore comes from a white man who named his cattle fillMORE (from the Spanish word "fuego" meaning "fire"). In 1852, two brothers founded Fillmore Adobe Mines which became one of the most important gold rush towns in California. The Adobe Mine disaster helped to reduce mining activity in Fillmore and other areas around it for many years. In 1872, local businessman George Hearn opened up a general store and post office called Fillmore with help from his friend and neighbor Hiram Bingham. The town quickly grew into a major center for trade and commerce within San Bernardino County. A new courthouse was built in 1875, followed by another schoolhouse in 1886 and a hotel/restaurant in 1896. A fire destroyed much of downtown Fillmore on May 3, 1908 when an over-the-counter pharmaceutical company exploded while being stored nearby during an illegal sale of fireworks

In 1868, the territorial government created the state of California out of parts of Nevada and Oregon. In 1906, following passage of the National Prohibition Act, Fillmore became one of the most lawless cities in America. Lawlessness led to social unrest which culminated in a series of riots that year that left four people dead and dozens injured. The city's reputation for lawlessness continued until it was finally cleansed by federal agents in 1920 under orders from President Warren G Harding. Today, Fillmore is a small town located near Sacramento with a population of around 1,000 residents. It is home to several museums including the fillMORE Museum which honors California's history during prohibition as well as today's cultural events such as music festivals and fashion shows at downtown venues like The Regency Ballroom or Main Street Social Club.
