The Coast Guard has been in operation in Fillmore, California since 1879. The first coast guard station was built on the present site of Fillmore High School in 1881. In 1895, a new station was built on the east side of town and named after General John J. Pershing. In 1916, a new station was built on the west side of town and named after Admiral George Dewey. The current structure was completed in 1935 and replaced an earlier station that had been damaged by fire. In 1978, the Coast Guard acquired two platforms from the San Francisco Municipal Railway (SFMART) for use as patrol boats at their headquarters in San Francisco. These platforms are now used as parking decks for Coast Guard vessels docked at Pier 39 in San Francisco. Since its inception, the Coast Guard has played an important role within our community by providing search and rescue services when needed; conducting border control operations;and more recently response to natural disasters such as wildfires and earthquakes. In addition to its many roles within our community, it is also dedicated to serving all visitors to our beautiful county through its Visitor Services program which provides special eventsabitationsandparkingasyoucanenjoythecoastguardseam’speaceful presenceonesthetripplacesvisitorsattheirdestinations

Fillmore was founded in 1853 by George Fillmore and his brothers. The town was named after then-Governor John C. Frémont, who had traveled through the area and recommended it for settlement. The Fillmores believed that the location would provide a natural center for trade, culture, and education, and they made their home there. The town grew rapidly during the 1850s due to its convenient location, its economic opportunities, and its proximity to major cities. In 1857, Fillmore became an incorporated city with a population of around 100 people. By 1860, the population had grown to over 500 people. Despite all of these successes, however, Fillmore faced significant challenges in the early 20th century. For one thing, it was difficult to find enough workers to build new businesses or improve old ones. Additionally, many residents were unhappy with their growing city government and felt that they were not being given enough say in how their community operated. This led to tension between the city council and the Fillmores until finally culminating in a civil war in 1916. After the war ended, much of what had been done to improve life in Fillmore slowly reverted back to what it had been before: a sleepy little town where few people lived or worked outside of agriculture or small businesses. However, since 2002 things have startedTo change again as some positive changes have come about such as more development happening within downtown Fillmore while also increasing access into all aspects of life for everyone living there despite some still struggling with poverty
