Fillmore was founded in 1847 by James Fillmore and his wife Susannah. The couple originally named the town after Fillmore's friend, General Winfield Scott. However, due to a lack of population growth, the town name was changed to Fillmore in 1860. In 1868, Fillmore became an incorporated city. In 1907, Fillmore experienced its first great flood when the Donner River overflowed its banks. At the time, it was one of the most devastating natural disasters in California history. Despite the floods, life continued unchanged as many people were moved to new homes and cities throughout California during this time period. During World War II, much of downtown Fillmore was destroyed by bombing raids from Japan. However, because of donations from citizens and businesses alike, reconstruction began quickly and all aspects of downtown fillmor were restored within a few years! Today,Fillmore is known for its agricultural production which includes haymaking and other livestock farming activities as well as winegrowing and cattle breeding on over 100 acres (40 hectares).
