The Portuguese were responsible for the marketing and distribution of coffee in the area and they played an important role in the development of maga coffee as we know it today. Over time, other groups also began to arrive in Fillmore. Irish immigrants arrived in 1892 and Italian immigrants followed suit in 1903. However, it was the Brazilian immigrants who truly made their mark on this small town. They founded a grocery store and cafe called Folha do Brasil which continues to be popular today. This cafe became known for its delicious maga coffee drinks which are still enjoyed by locals and tourists alike. In 1951, Fillmore joined other towns along the Peninsula Corridor (the eastern border of San Francisco) when it became part of the newly formed city of San Francisco. In 1979, maga coffee became a protected species under California law and is now considered an official regional dialect within San Francisco County. As such, maga coffee has continued to play an important role throughout our community’s history – from being used as currency during prohibition days to current day operations at Folha do Brasil Cafe!

Fillmore is a town located in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 2,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Salinas–Tulare Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fillmore was founded in 1872 by Dutchman Cornelius Vanderbilt and his wife Maria van Schaik as a small farming community on Rancho San José de la Pásima. The first post office opened in 1875. In 1907 Fillmore became an incorporated community with a one-room schoolhouse as its only building. The townspeople built Fillmore High School in 1912 and renamed it after Fillmore's birthplace, Netherlands-born Van der Velde Frits (1847-1902). In 1951, the school district changed its name to Salinas Valley Unified School District and moved all of its high schools to new facilities in nearby Salinas. Families who had been living near Fillmore for generations began leaving when they were required to attend local public schools starting from kindergarten through 12th grade beginning on September 1, 1965; this was done due to Proposition 6, which mandated that public education be available for all children regardless of family income levels or other resources. A few people chose to stay and fight for their rights while others left because of economic reasons such as increased reclamation costs associated with growing agriculture around the area or changes within government policies related to school funding which favored more affluent families over poorer ones. Upon their departure, their wagon train left behind a lasting legacy in Fillmore: an iconic building known as the fillMORE House.
