The mission was established to promote trade and friendship between the United States and China. American citizens from Fillmore and surrounding towns donated items such as swords, shotguns, rifles, pistols and other weaponry to the military mission. In 1868, a post office was established in Fillmore and the first mail was delivered via horseback from San Francisco. In 1898, the U.S. Postal Service opened an office in Fillmore which helped increase postal trade between America and China. American soldiers stationed in China received gifts such as clothing, tools and food when they returned home. During World War II, Japanese forces invaded California on December 7th 1941 and over two months later had reached San Francisco Bay Bridge just south of Fillmore (then known as Benicia). president Franklin D Roosevelt ordered all Americans east of the bay to evacuate their homes before they were bombed by Japan's air force or captured alive by its troops (known as Operation Downfall). About half a million people were killed or wounded during WWII in California alone including many civilians who died due to lack of food or water shortages caused by bombing raids on major cities like San Francisco Bay Area

In 1876, Ezra built the first store in what is now downtown Fillmore. By 1912, there were twelve stores in downtown Fillmore. During World War II, local businesses helped support the war effort by manufacturing goods such as munitions and clothing for soldiers. After the war ended, many local businesses closed down or went out of business because of economic recession conditions that prevailed at that time. However, several new businesses have since opened up around downtown Fillmore including The Coffee Shop & Cafe which reopened after being closed for over thirty years; Jenks Art Gallery which reopened after being closed for over twenty years; and Noodle Peak Brewery which has been open since 2007

In the early 1870s, Fillmore underwent a major transformation when it became the home of the California gold Rush. Many miners and their families arrived in town during this time to find riches beyond their wildest dreams. By 1875, Fillmore had reached its peak economically and socially; it was known as one of the most important towns in California. However, by 1880s fillmorians were starting to leave for newer mining areas such as Sutter County or Nevada City due to economic hardships caused by low prices for gold and competition from these new mines. During the late 1800s until World War II, much of what is now downtown Fillmore was built up around what are now two large jails - San Quentin State Prison (1887) and Santa Clara Valley Jail (1896). These facilities were used extensively for penitentiary inmates during this period; however, today they are largely unused reminders of an earlier era than our current community would like to remember. In recent years there has been some redevelopment effort taking place within these walls; however much remains unchanged from when these buildings were first constructed more than 150 years ago
