In 1945, the base was activated as a United StatesAAF airfield and it soon became one of the most important bases in California during World War II. The base saw many amazing aviation feats, including being home to the first operational Boeing B-29 Superfortress bomber in 1946. During the Korean War, Folsom AFB played an essential role in supplying air support for US forces operating against North Korea. It also helped establish USAF Night Bomber Command as one of America’s premier strategic bombing forces. The base has seen many changes over the years, but its legacy remains strong today. For example, it is now home to both The George Washington University School of Aeronautics and Astronomy and The Department of Civil Engineering at UC Berkeley – two world-renowned universities that share a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) to keep their campuses adjacent to each other on military land near Folsom AFB.
Folsom is a city in Sacramento County, California, United States. The population was 753 at the 2010 census. Folsom is located on the Folsom River and is part of the Sacramento–Arden-Arcade–Van Nuys Metropolitan Statistical Area. It lies west of downtown Sacramento and east of Van Nuys. In 1859, John Sutter founded the town of Folsom on land that he had bought from George C. Frémont for $1,000 (). In 1866, the town was renamed for Ulysses S. Grant (), then redesignated as Folsom in honor of General Ulysses S. Grant's wife Julia Compton () in 1897 (). The name reverted to Folsom in 1907 after General Grant's death (). The first post office was established at Folsom on July 10, 1876 (). A school was built there in 1877 and named West View School (); it burned down in 1886 but was rebuilt under new ownership and became known as East View School (); it burned down again in 1912 but was rebuilt under new management and became known as South View School (). A branch line from Sacramento to Redding opened at Folsom on December 1, 1906; this line served as an important connection for farmers who transported goods by wagon overland from Northern California to Southern California . A branch line from Arden connecting with Redding opened at Folsom on December 1, 1916; this line served primarily as a route for agricultural products moving north from Kern County through Arden to be distributed throughout Northern California . A branch line from Van Nuys connecting with Sacramentoopened at Matherville on December 5, 1937; this line served primarily as a route for passengers travelling between Van Nuys andSacramento . On November 15, 1951 voters approved Measure V (the Valley freeways), which created four main trunk highways: Interstate 5 (I-5) running northeasterly through the city center via Durant Boulevard (now Glenn Highway), I-680 running easterly across Elk Grove Boulevard (), I-80N running southwesterly across Live Oak Boulevard (), and State Route 66 running southerly along Grandview Drive ()
The United States Air Force (USAF) is the aerial warfare service branch of the U.S. Armed Forces and one of the five military branches of the federal government. It has been in existence since 1947, as part of the United States Congress's National Security Act of 1947. The USAF traces its origins to World War I, when established as an armada of planes to support European forces against Central Powers during World War I. In 1912, through a process known as unification, all Army brigades were merged into a new air force organization called Aviation Section First Brigade; this was done in order to improve coordination between services and prevent Britain from dominating American aviation during wartime. In 1932, after years of development and testing by Lieutenant Colonel Billy Mitchell, America's first jet fighter entered operational service with the Eighth Air Force on April 10th at Muroc Field near Los Angeles under Major General James Estrin; it was designated Lockheed P-38 Lightning II for its alleged speed and altitude superiority over rival German aircraft types at that time. Folsom is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 24,262 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Kern County and one of the largest cities in California. Folsom was founded by Anglo-Americans in 1876 as a small town on the Folsom Rancho Aguaje Indian Reservation. The city began to grow rapidly after railroad developers bought land near the edge of town and built stations there to serve local farmers and ranchers with goods brought up the Central Valley from markets in San Francisco and Sacramento. By 1910, Folsom had become an important transportation center for rural Kern County residents travelling to nearby agricultural towns such as Bakersfield or Los Angeles. In 1916, when Folsom became part of the City of Los Angeles Municipal Light District, it lost some of its significance as a commercial center but continued to grow due to its location within easy reach of downtown Los Angeles and other major metropolitan areas. During World War II, Folsom played an important role in military efforts against Japan by serving as a Major General's airbase and troop training area. Afterward, it revitalized itself as an industrial city with a strong manufacturing sector that continues today. Today's economy is based largely on services such as education, healthcare, government contracting, technology transfer/export (including aerospace), retail trade (finance/commerce), real estate development/renting/leasing/professional services etc., with some primary reliance on agriculture (hundreds of acres used for growing crops for local consumption) providing jobs for about 30 percent of the workforce.
Folsom was founded in 1859 by James Folsom, a man who had come to the area from Illinois. The town was named for General Sam Houston, who had been its first postmaster. In 1870, Folsom became an agricultural center and began to grow apples. A flour mill was built in 1875 and the town became known as the " flour capital of California." The discovery of oil in 1913 led to increased production at the mill and the development of a non-ferrous industry in Folsom. The population grew rapidly during World War II and demand for goods made from aluminum also led to growth. The economy declined during the 1970s and 1980s as a result of changes in technology and consumer preferences. However, recent growth has seen renewed activity at the mill and new businesses established in the town.
