The United States Army was founded on April 6, 1775, in Philadelphia. The Continental Army was the first professional American military and it fought for independence from Great Britain during the American Revolution. In 1847, the United States Congress passed an act authorizing the creation of a standing army and this act created the Department of War which became operational on July 1, 1848. On February 15, 1850, President James K. Polk authorized the organization of a Cavalry Corps to supplement infantry units in times of war or emergency. The First Infantry Regiment (Cavalry) was organized on March 3rd and served until June 30th 1861 when it converted to artillery service under General George B. McClellan. On November 13th 1861, elements of Confederate General Robert E. Lee’s division attacked Union forces at Second Battle of Bull Run Creek and this battle ended with Confederate victory and Union loss; however, this event is often cited as one of the turning points in the Civil War. In 1862 both armies were called into action again at Antietam where Union forces unsuccessfully attempted to routed Confederate troops after suffering heavy losses; however, this battle is also commonly cited as another turning point in the Civil War because it helped spur Lincoln to sign Abraham Lincoln’s Executive Order “constructing a Military Division West of Mexico” which effectively gave command over all military operations within Mexican territory to General Edwin Vandal Callender who had been appointed commander-in-chief by Woodrow Wilson concurrent with Lincoln’s second term in office; Callender failed to fully carry out his orders leading to additional Federal casualties along withy increasing manpower requirements for both armies which caused their respective commanders extensive problems throughout 1863–1865 while they tried unsuccessfully to join together against Sherman’s march through Virginia and Kentucky respectively). Folsom, California is a small city in the East Bay of San Francisco. The population was 17,716 at the 2010 census. It is located in Contra Costa County on the border of Alameda and Contra Costa Counties. Folsom has been inhabited by humans since at least 10,000 BC. The first known permanent settlement in what is now Folsom was a trading post called Fort Point on the Suisun River between 1847 and 1850. In 1851, the United States acquired Rancho Folsom from Manuel Nieto for $10,000. The city's first mayor was Michael B. Jordan who served from 1951 to 1957; he was succeeded by Edwin Latham who served until 1959. During this time, Folsom experienced its most dramatic growth with an increase of over 100% in population from 1950 to 1958 alone! After Latham left office, City Councilman Harry Wolk became Mayor and led the city through some difficult times such as becoming one of only three cities in California to have a liquefied natural gas plant built within their borders (the others being Oakland and Berkeley). However during his time as Mayor there were also several important developments such as construction of Interstate 235 which improved access to jobs in nearby Fremont and Richmond while creating new public housing developments such as Parnassus Park which opened in 1967 and still remains one of the most popular neighborhoods around town today! Wolk retired after two terms in office and was succeeded by his son-in-law Jerry Brown who served until 2003 when he resigned amid corruption allegations. Brown's successor Gavin Newsom took office following his election victory on November 3rd 2003 and has been leader of the city ever since! As leader of Folsom City Hall it would come as no surprise thatJerry Brown signed into law Proposition 209 which legalized gay marriage throughout California effective January 1st 2004! This event marks an important milestone for Folsom as it becomes one of only two cities (the other being San Francisco) where same sex marriage is legal statewide! Despite these exciting changes however things can always be better - during Jerry Brown's final term on December 15th 2013 he announced that plans were underway to demolish much older structures within the downtown area including many blocks long full ofhistoric buildings dating back toenormous amountsof money had been spent renovating them but because they are not inline with modern trends they are slated for demolition rather than renovation!! This news came as quite a shock to many residents who had grown used to enjoying their old historic buildings without any fear that they would be lost forever! Many people are hopeful that this decision will mark a change towards preserving our heritage while also giving us some hope that maybe we can still enjoy our beautiful downtown area even though it may eventually be demolished?
