Folsom is a small town in Sacramento County, California, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sacramento–Roseville–Arden-Arcade, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area. Folsom was founded in 1877 by William Folsom and James Smith. It became a town on December 5, 1892 when it was incorporated as a city by an act of the California Legislature. Folsom City annexed Arden Heights on February 14, 1907. The first post office in Folsom opened on October 10, 1879. The present Post Office building was built in 1903 and contains a gift from Mr. Wm Doolittle which has been used as the municipal auditorium since 1904. In November 1912 Folsom residents seceded from Sacramento County to form their own government under the name of "Empire City". On November 3rd 1913 they voted to change their name back to Folsom after ratification of an ordinance by the county board of supervisors which provided for that change only if there were no other changes proposed within 60 days. In 1916 he incorporation with Roseville which had been platted adjacent to his home place just east of downtown Folsom; however annexation proceedings continued until 1917 when both towns were united into one municipality with William Doolittle as its first Mayor and Town Clerk (1917-1920). On January 1st 1920 daughter cityhood petitioners applied for incorporation with a population estimated at 2500 but this application was not accepted because there were no objections from other cities located adjacent thereto or any opposition from voters living within the unincorporated areas which then comprised parts of both Cities including Arden Heights & Addison Hills . So another Petition being filed by citizens residing therein against annexation submitted same day & resulted In A Vote Of Unanimity To Annex Arden Heights As Well As Addison Hills Which Resulted In The Union Of those Towns Into One Municipal Entity With Wm Doolittle As Its First Mayor) A new Post Office Buildingwas constructedin 1927 adjoining what is now Plaza Dr., off I Street between Main Sts.(a short distance southwest of where Main St meets Plaza Dr.) and it served until 1957 when it burned down due to bad weather conditions(Wrecking Balloons caused fire). After replacement it reopened on February 8th 1959& remained open until May 6th 1970 when it closed again due to budget cuts resulting in closure of all U S Postal Service facilities north of I Street between Main Sts.) In 1951 William Doolittle erected what is now called “the Tower” at corner old Hwy 101 & Elm Rd., across from current Sunnyside Mall #1.) This tall metal tower commemorates year during Owens Valley earthquake relief effort & has been used for concerts (& public meetings) ever since. From 1962 thru 1966 it housed local Chamber Music Society performances while Sunnyside Mall underwent renovation project yielding increased use for tower space& ultimately causing truncation/closure OF Museum hoursdue TO lack thereof) During 1990s major rebranding program led by Patsy Cline helped revive downtown imageof once sleepy little town while keeping many historic buildings preserved
Folsom is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 25,824 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Folsom Valley between San Francisco and Oakland. The first European to sight what became Folsom was Juan Bautista de Anza during his 1769 exploration of the north coast of California. He named it Tafta (now part of Richmond), after Jan Pieterszoon van der Tuyn, Governor-General of New Netherland from 1639-1642. In 1853, Folsom's post office was moved from Walnut Creek to Folsom because nearby Stockton could not service its mail over the Chisholm Trail due to hostility towards Native Americans by settler farmers. A small community developed around the new post office until1885 when a larger town began to form, led by J.B. Foster and others who bought land in what is now downtown Folsom from various farmers and ranchers in an effort to create a center for agriculture and commerce on what had been little more than scattered homesteads dating back hundreds of years. Foster renamed his new town "Folsom" in honor of Ulysses S Grant who had visited the area while campaigning for election as President in 1858; he later donated $5,000 to help build a public library there which opened its doors on October 26, 1883. By 1870, about 100 people lived in downtown Folsom with four stores and two blacksmith shops; however banking services were not available until 1889 when First National Bank built a building on Whatcom Street adjacent to state capitol complex that served as their headquarters until 1971 when they relocated across Interstate 5 south of Fremont Street within walking distance of Safeway shopping center east off I-580/I-880 throughout most of their history). In 1896 voter turnout reaches 98%. In 1912 it reached 103%. A fire destroys much property including most business buildings in 1917 but downtown still thrives with three stores (Jingles Hardware & Glass Co., Lumbermens warehouse & sawmill) and one hotel before becoming an abandoned district following World War II until being reactivated as an arts/entertainment district following The Great Recession starting in 2007 under plans by Mayor Russ Rakey (D)
