The history of the Navy in Folsom began with a small group of men who, in 1866, organized the first Naval Militia unit in that city. The militia was soon disbanded and its members moved to other cities but the memory of their efforts still lingers today. In 1870, Mayor A. L. Goode convinced the City Council to establish a Navy Yard on Commerce Street and within two years it had become a thriving enterprise with more than 100 employees. The Yard was used for both storage and repairs on vessels being built or repaired at San Francisco Bay. In 1875, Mayor Goode requested federal funding to purchase two vessels—the USS Constitution (1863) and USS Menomonee (1876)—for use as naval warships in California’s coast defense system. After much discussion, Congress appropriated $5 million for this purpose which was divided among nine states as part of the Compromise of 1850. Governor Goodwin Foster agreed to lease these ships to the California Naval Militia and also authorized the erection of blastfords along Santa Barbara Strait as part of coastal defense measures against potential pirate attacks by Mexican smugglers operating from Point Conception Island off Ventura County. With these new maritime capabilities, Folsom became an important port for cargo shipments from Northern California into Southern California until World War II when ocean shipping replaced land transportation as the dominant means of moving goods between those regions. Today, Folsom is home to four Navy Shipyards - Nimitz-class Destroyer USS Porter (DDG-81), Enterprise- class Carrier USS John Sutter (CVN-74), Trenton Class Submarine USS Gammon (SSBN-726), and George Washington Class Submarine USS Keyes (SSN-823).

Folsom, California is a small city in Sacramento County, California. The population was 31,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat for Sacramento County and it is also the largest city in the Sacramento Metropolitan Area. The name "Folsom" comes from a mission station called Mission Dolores on the west side of present-day Folsom Street and Alma Road. In 1868, John Sutter founded Sutter’s Fort near what is now downtown Folsom after losing an epic battle with Mexico over land grants in Sonoma County. The Mexican forces burned down Sutter’s fort and looted his goods before retreating eastward across the mountain ranges into Nevada Territory. The post office at Mission Dolores was named for General José Joaquín de la Hoz y Saravia (1796–1864), captain general of Mexican troops who fought against American forces during the American-Mexican War (1846–48). La Hoz y Saravia was born in 1796 to parents who had immigrated from Spain to Alta California as part of Juan Bautista de Anza's first wave of European arrivals in 1824. La Hoz y Saravia served as lieutenant colonel commanding Spanish troops attacking Umpqua River Bridge on January 26, 1846 during withering American resistance to Mexican military campaigns under Santa Ana governor Antonio López de Santa Anna The post office moved from its original location at First and Taylor Streets on February 13th due to increased mail traffic caused by reports of Mexican guerrilla activity inside San Francisco Bayonne (now Oakland) along this stretch of coast Highway 1 interstate highway stretching inland from Silicon Valley between San Francisco andOakland

Folsom, California was founded in 1853 by James Folsom and a group of his friends. The city was named after James Folsom, the namesake of the town in which it is located. The first post office in Folsom opened in 1854. In 1865, the legislature renamed the city to City of Sacramento because of its importance as the capital of California. In 1892, City Hall was moved from Sacramento to Folsom when that city became an independent municipality. The population of Folsom increased rapidly during World War II due to military Consolidation efforts in Northern California; however, rates of crime and economic decline followed soon thereafter.
Folsom was founded in 1853 by Captain George Folsom and his partners, John W. Richardson and David H. Albright. In 1863, the town became a part of California when it was given to the state by Mexico under the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The post office at Folsom was opened on October 15, 1853, and remained in operation until it was discontinued on March 14, 1911.
