Fontana, California is a city in Kern County, California, United States. The population was 20,826 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The first European to visit Fontana was Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portolà on October 8, 1769. He named it San Bernardino de la Frontera after his brother-in-law, Bernardino de Sahagún. A mission founded in 1821 by Franciscan friars became known as Mission Dolores and served as the county seat until 1873 when Fontana was chosen as county seat because of its location adjacent to Los Angeles County's eastern border. In 1915, John Diller founded Jardine & Diller flour mill in Fontana and began producing bread from alluvial gold discovered near the mill site. In 1940 Jardine merged with Harrods department store chain to form British American Tobacco Corporation (BAT). BAT later became Rexall Drugs Incorporated before being spun off into its own company in 1999 called Shoppers Drug Mart plc (SDS). In 2000 SDS merged with AmerisourceBergen Corporation (Amerisource) to become one of North America's largest healthcare retailers. The city of Fontana was incorporated on December 13, 1912; it was located north of present-day downtown Fontana on what is now eastbound I-5 within the jurisdiction of Riverside County; but it had no say over government policy or economic development within Kern County until 1923 when voters approved a charter amendment providing for a town hall and jail system which would eventually lead to the establishment of downtown Fontana as the primary governmental center for both counties. The original town hall building still stands today next door to City Hall south between 1st Street and 3rd Street west across from Riverside Regional Library
Fontana started as a small farming community in 1887. It was an agricultural center for the surrounding area and supplied goods to San Francisco, Los Angeles, and other parts of the Bay Area. The population grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s, and by 1915 there were over 1,500 residents. In 1925, Fontana incorporated as a city under the jurisdiction of San Bernardino County. The economy changed during World War II when munitions production increased in the area; Fontana became a major manufacturing town. After the war, growth slowed but remained strong until the 1990s when downtown businesses declined and new housing began to be developed outside of town. In recent years, Fontana has experienced significant redevelopment with mixed-use projects such as the new Fontana Stadium and Arena which replaced aging sports venues in downtown; mixed-income housing developments such as Arbor View Terrace & Chapel Pointe; and retail stores including several anchor convenience stores along First Street NE.
