The United States Army has a rich history dating back to the Revolutionary War. In 1802, the first U.S. Infantry Regiment was organized in Fontana and served under General Anthony Trollope during the war. The regiment was disbanded in 1803, but it re-emerged in 1804 as part of the 2nd Infantry Brigade under Major General James K. Polk. In 1861, after Abraham Lincoln became president, he ordered an increased number of infantry brigades within the Union army and in 1862 created two new infantry regiments: one called the 1st California Infantry Regiment and another called the 3rd California Infantry Regiment (now known as The First Battalion, 9th Marines). These two new infantry regiments were stationed at Fort Donelson and Corinth, Mississippi respectively; however they only saw action once, against Confederate forces at Corinth on April 6th 1862. After Union victory at Gettysburg on July 4th 1863, all three of America’s newly created infantry regiments were sent east to help with reconstruction efforts following that battle. The 1st California Infantry Regiment deployed to New York City for duty on September 25th 1863; however due to its assignment there it did not participate in any major engagements during that time period. On October 15th 1863, both divisions of the 1st California Infantry Regiment reunited near Spring Valley Junction where they remained until relieved by other units on November 7th 1863 while still located within New York City limits. On December 3rd 1863 both companies of this regiment joined forces with Company B from Company A fromthe Second Battalion Ninth Marines (later renamed First Battalion 9th Marines) at Ford’s Bridge outside Petersburg so that these troops could provide cover for General George McClellan’s army moving upriver towards Richmond before BattleOfRichmond began on December 12th 1863. Shortly before Battle OfRichmond began General John Jealous ordered his brigade commander Colonel Augustus Chapman to move his company north around Centreville so that his men might offer covering fire from positions overlooking Mechanicsville Road which would become artillery range later in the day when Confederate artillery opened up their fire upon our retreating army which resulted in many casualties among our own unit members who had no choice but to turn their backs upon their comrades who were fighting “for their country” even though they knew full well what would happen next! colonel Chapman didn't stop there though – he continued moving his company northeastward through Centreville until finally reaching Mechanicsville Road whereupon he stopped short and ordered his men forward again providing cover for those adjacent to him while also taking advantage of whatever opportunity presented itself i e maneuvering his company into position along Mechanicsville Road so as not too be seen by enemy artillerymen who could then target us directly! all this maneuvering took place amidst heavy sniper fire being fired upon us by Confederate snipers situated atop nearby hills! colonel Chapman's example showed us how never give up – even when your outnumbered and outgunned! Aftermath reports indicate that approximately 50% or more of our unit members died as a direct result of sniperfire which is something we will never forget!

In 1978, Fontana were named one of California's "25 Most Downtrodden Cities". In recent years, however, there has been renewed interest in Fontana given its unique history and culture. Recently, businesses have reopened within the town limits and new development has begun to take place throughout downtown.
