Hickey in 1884 on land that he donated from his estate in Chino Hills. The city's first post office was established in 1886 and its first mayor was John Lyle Whitehead. Fontana was founded in 1887 by J.P. Morgan and other railroad entrepreneurs as a small community on the eastern edge of Los Angeles County. The name comes from nearby Fontana Lake, which was once a popular spot for swimming and fishing. By 1907, the town had grown to include a post office, two banks, four hotels, and over 100 residences. In 1915, Fontana became one of the first communities in California to accept women as residents. The following year saw the opening of one of California's first public schools for girls- Fontana High School. In 1922, Fontana became an incorporated city with its own police department and mayoralty. It would remain an unincorporated community until 1989 when it was granted city status again by then Mayor Richard Riordan. The economic activity in Fontana during the 1920s and 1930s centered around manufacturing goods such as radios and phonographs; however, after World War II began to take its toll on local businesses,Fontana experienced rapid growth in retail trade due to its location near major highways and shopping malls throughout Southern California. During this time period also came significant progress being made within the city itself including new housing developments such as Park Plaza Towers and Crescent City Center; both were designed by architects Harry Weese and Edward Crain under the guidance of then-City Administrator John Hargrave (1924-1935).
