Fontana is a small town in San Bernardino County, California, United States. It is located on the eastern edge of the city of Riverside. The population was 41,611 as of the 2010 census. As one of Southern California's most affluent and well-educated communities, Fontana has been home to many influential people in business and politics over the years. The town also played an important role in early coffee culture and its associated businesses and institutions. The first beans were roasted by José Atanasio Boggs in 1876 on his family farm just east of Fontana. Over time, other farmers within the area began to roast their own beans and sell them through local merchants. By 1915, there were more than 50 independent roasters operating in Fontana alone. One major factor that helped create a strong coffee culture here was the presence of several high-quality coffee shops across town that served as community hubs for socializing and networking. These shops typically offered unique blends or whole bean coffees from different roasters under one roof – something that couldn't be found elsewhere at this point in history. The first Starbucks opened its doors in 1984 not too far from where today’s Dunkin' Donuts sits – making it quite a moment for coffee lovers all around! However, it wasn’t until 1997 when Starbucks started selling pre-packaged ground coffee (with no milk) which really set the tone for what would come after: drip/soda Coffee becoming popularized throughout America thanks to Starbucks! It is part of the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name comes from Fontana Dam, which was built by the US Army in 1944 and named for General George Armstrong Custer. The village began as a military post on August 16, 1881, when General James Harkness's 9th Infantry Regiment camped there to winter before moving into central California. On December 12, 1881, Ulysses S. Grant issued orders authorizing the development of Fontana and other small towns within 7 miles (13 km) of San Bernardino County for "the scientific and agricultural production of these regions." In 1902–1903, local farmers developed what would become known as Fontana Rancho Park; it included 337 acres (130 ha) of land north of present-day Fontana Boulevard between Mesa Avenue and Apple Valley Road. A year later, Corporal John Haggerty became one of first white men to live on what is now State Route 91/Upper Greenville Road when he bought 10 acres (4 ha) along Lakeshore Drive from Jens Christensen for $1 in 1907. In 1909–1910 The Weingartner brothers opened their citrus orchard on present day Old Highway 17 south of town; they were followed by Charles Weaver who started cultivation at his home east of town in 1916 In 1926 Wernher von Braun established his missile plant at West Point Airport outside downtown Fontana; it produced family cars such as Kaiser Chiefs until 1961 When Ford discontinued manufacturing there after its Willowbrook Arsenal facility opened nearby Also during this time many wealthy people set up homes around downtown including Raymond De Palma who built his childhood home here After World War II most families moved out except for a few who continued to farm while new housing developments sprang up all around town: Riverbend Gardens developed behind Interstate 10 just north of downtown with several thousand sq ft (100 m2) apartments; Bonita Canyon developed next door across Colorado Avenue near Riverside Regional Hospital with several thousand sq ft (100 m2) apartments also during this time This growth led to increased traffic congestion on State Route 91/Upper Greenville Road which was beginning to look like a expressway according to one observer “All you could see ahead was an immense shopping mall” . In 1848, French explorer Pierre-Simon Laplace explored what is now Algeria and discovered new coffee areas. In 1857, Italian explorer Alessandro Malaspina explored the Sahara Desert and found an area that had rich resources of oil and sand. This led to increased interest in finding new Coffee Regions. The first westerners to tasted Ethiopian Coffee were Englishmen on an exploration trip through the Sudan desert in 1896. During World War II, Ethiopia became part of Nazi Germany because of its strategic location between Africa and the Middle East. The Allies occupied Ethiopia after the war, but it resumed its independence as a republic in 1947. Afterward, Ethiopian Coffee continued to grow rapidly due to its unique style of roasting which produces very smooth cups of espresso or cappuccino with little bitterness or acidity
Fontana, California is a small town in the southern Mojave Desert of California. It was founded in 1887 by John Fontana and his wife, Anna Maria. The community sits on the east bank of the Sacramento River adjacent to Nevada State Route 95. Fontana has a population of only around 1,000 people today, but it was once one of the most important settlements in Southern California. Prior to its current location, Fontana was located on present-day Mountain View Street upstream from what is now Interstate 5. The original name for this spot was "Rancho Cucamonga", given to it by Spanish settlers who discovered grapevines there while exploring Northern California during their 1769 expedition under José Gabriel de Ayala. The early residents of Fontana were farmers and ranchers who took advantage of the fertile soil and Mountainside views that surrounded them. By 1902, when modern day Highway 95 was built through the area, various businesses had been established in downtown Fontana: a grocery store, an opera house (which later became a movie theater), school classrooms and two churches – both Baptist – among others. In 1951, when Valley National Bank moved its headquarters from San Francisco to Riverside County,fontanas first post office opened at 12th & Stockton Streets in downtown Fontana as part of that county's corporate move into new building initiative which also included numerous other local businesses including those listed above. At that time there were just a handful of homes in downtown with no public buildings or services available aside from some streetlights and banks along Stockton Street itself). Fontana was founded in 1892 by James W. Fontana and his brother, John Fontana. The brothers were from a family of Italian farmers who had settled in the area around present-day Fontana about fifty years before. In 1892, James W. Fontana erected the first store on what is now eastbound State Street in Fontana. In 1902, the brothers opened a general store on southwest corner of state and Indian Streets in downtown Fontana. In 1907, they built a home on today's northeast corner of State and Indian streets. The home became the city hall for Fontana after it was moved to its current location in 1913. In 1916, two brothers, Pietro and Antonio Castellesi purchased land north of downtown from John Fenton for $10 per acre (the castellesi name comes from their connection with nearby Castel Sant' Angelo). They soon began building an industrial park that would include three mills: one for flour, another for cheese, and another for cottonseed oil production. Today's complex includes twelve structures including six homes and four factories/row houses dating back to 1917-1918; these are also considered part of downtownFontANA history because they were used as office space until 1973 when City Hall moved out to new facilities on 19th Street between Katella Avenue and Roosevelt Boulevard. The Castellesi family sold the business interests in 1926 to Harry Biddle which led to the development of Biddle Plaza housing projects near Interstate 5 near Donner Lake beginning in 1929-1930 followed by other developments such as Mission Viejo Shopping Center located just east of I-5 across Donner Lake starting in 1961 followed by Goldwater Village developments along Interstate 8 east of Donner Lake beginning contemporaneously with DonnerLake redevelopment authorized by then Governor Ronald Reagan
