Fontana, California is a city located in San Bernardino County, California. The population was 66,291 at the 2010 census. It is the largest city in San Bernardino County by population. Fontana has a history dating back to 1876 and is one of the few cities in the United States that did not become part of Mexico during the Mexican-American War. It reemerged as an independent city after Californio citizens defeated Mexican forces at the Battle of Fontana on November 15, 1881. The first settler in what became Fontana was George Whetstone who arrived in 1876 from England. He founded a small community near present-day Spring Valley and named it after his brother-in-law, Lorenzo Fontana (1812-1886). At that time there were only about fifty people living in what would later be called Fontana. For many years, much of what we call today downtown Fontana consisted of small adobe buildings which served as homes for many generations of residents. In 1901, when Los Angeles was created from southern San Bernardino County and parts of Riverside County, Fontana became part of Los Angeles City Limits within City Of Los Angeles boundaries. Fontana is a city in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. It was founded on February 14, 1885 by the merger of two small villages, Fontana and Lancaster. The name comes from the Fontanella Valley nearby. The first post office in Fontana opened on December 1, 1888. By 1906, there were twenty-four businesses in town and over one thousand people living there. The population grew rapidly during World War I and1920s due to new housing developments and other economic prosperity brought about by the Nevada–Arizona Canal Company project which connected Los Angeles with Las Vegas. In 1933, after years of planning by then Mayor Harry Chandler, Fontana became an incorporated city with a mayor-council form of government under which all citizens are represented through elected officials at City Council meetings. The council also has power to issue ordinances amending or repealing city laws passed by the mayor without first having them voted on by the full City Council. In 1951 voters approved a $25 million bond issue for water supply, sewerage and street repairs necessary for growth following years of drought. During World War II many residents enlisted in military service; as a result many streets were renamed after military units or ships that served during that conflict such as Sherman Avenue ( named for General Robert E. Lee), Vicksburg Avenue (named for General Ulysses S Grant) and Coral Way (named for Admiral Ernest J Malone). In 1957 Mayor Earl Sprague increased funding available to City Hall through Proposition 13; this measure repealed most local taxes except property tax rates which would continue to be raised based on assessed value rather than population size like they had been since 1903 when municipal boundaries began expanding outward along mountain ranges more rapidly than actual taxable acreage).
