Fontana was founded in 1872 by Carlos Fontana and his brother-in-law, Manuel Miranda. The brothers were a team of entrepreneurs who built the town on the banks of the San Joaquin River. They named their town after one of their fathers, Francisco Fontana, who had settled in what is now Fresno two decades earlier. The first store in Fontana opened its doors in 1872. By 1905, there were 10 stores in the town and over 100 residents. The businesses thrived due to the fertile land and good water supply that flowed through the area. In 1924, Fontana became a city and it would remain so until 1989 when it reverted back to rural status. In 2009, however, Mayor Barry Goldwater declared that Fontana should become an “ urban center” once again because of its potential economic development opportunities.
