The United States Navy has been deployed in various locations throughout the world for over 200 years. The deployment of a warship to Fontana, California during World War II was significant because it marked the first time that a navy ship had ever been stationed in the city. Fontana is a city in Kern County, California. The population was 44,838 at the 2010 census and was estimated to be 50,872 by the 2016 estimate. Fontana is located on the edge of the Mojave Desert. The name "Fontana" comes from "Fonte Nova", which means new fountain in Italian. It was first settled in 1851 by George A. Cohan and his wife Maria del Carmen de la Cueva as part of what would become Section 10 of Rancho Mirage. In 1864, Charles Wirtz bought sections 8 and 9 from Drury Price and moved Fontana to its present location on May 30 of that year. On October 15, 1893, a post office called Fontana was established at the junction of Treat Avenue and San Bernardino Road (now Foothill Boulevard). The community rapidly grew due to trade with nearby cities such as Los Angeles and Phoenix for goods transported overland via wagon path through the Owens Valley National Forest. By 1901, there were stores, a hotel, church services and several homes in town. On October 1st 1907 Don Haggerty opened up Fontana's first grocery store known as The Grapeseed Ranch Store which operated until it closed in 1969 after Haggerty's death at age 87 years old; he had been proprietor since 1903 when his father founded it on Redondo Beach Boulevard near where Interstate 5 now meets Gardena Boulevard outside downtown Fontana - an area now known as The Crescent City district adjacent to Chino Hills Regional Park just east of Interstate 5/I-5 exit 136B (Rancho Mirage Boulevard)

Fontana, California is a small town located in Riverside County, California. It was founded in 1892 by John P. Fontana and his family. The town has grown and changed over the years, but its history remains largely unchanged. The first settler in Fontana was John P. Fontana, who arrived in 1892 and built a home on the east side of the creek that later became known as Cottonwood Creek. In 1898, two brothers named Harry Hildebrandt and Willard O’Neill came to Fontana from Stockton to help out their father with his dairy business. They also built a house on Cottonwood Creek off of State Route 99A which served as the community's first grocery store and post office. In 1903, when state Route 99 was extended westward from Riverside into Orange County, Fontana became part of that new county; however, it continued to use its original name until 1907 when it changed back to Fontana after being given an extra letter by the state government because of its size (fontanah – "river"). The population of the town reached 1,000 residents by 1910; however, it only boasted about 150 residents during World War I because most of those folks had moved away for military service or war-related activities. During World War II, much of what is now downtown Fontana was destroyed due to bombing raids by Japanese forces during World War II; however, much of the original buildings still stand today including the old Masonic Lodge building which is now used as a library branch. After World War II ended, many people left FontANA for more spacious surroundings such as Northridge or Huntington Beach; however, many veterans managed to keep some semblance of their culture alive until the late 1990s when they finally lost all traces thereof altogether. As time passed though things slowly began changing again with development gradually encroaching upon what had once been an agricultural village nestled between hillsocky forests dating back centuries ago; thus beginning what would become oneof Southern California's most ongoing histories: continuous change followed by gradual restoration culminating in present day City Park - anchored firmly within this picturesque valley - where you can explore ancient ruins (the city jail) while enjoying fresh mountain air at any timeof day...
Fontana was founded on December 24, 1855 by John Fontana and his wife Nancy. The town became a consolidated city in 1912. In 1959, Fontana voters passed a resolution asking the California State Legislature to recognize the city as an independent city with its own government. On July 16, 1960, the California State Senate passed a resolution recognizing Fontana as an independent city and giving it its own budget and Mayor-Council form of government. The City of Fontana formally incorporated as an independent city on October 1, 1960.
