When the Mexican War began in 1846, General Winfield Scott ordered all United States forces under his command to march south and fight against Mexico. This order called for American commanders to give away their firearms and equipment to their troops so that they could be more effective fighting enemies without strategic advantages. A group of citizens from Fortuna gathered around Mr. Whitehead’s store on Wednesday night, October 1, 1846, to ask for donations of weapons and ammunition for the war effort. At this time there was no army stationed in town – only volunteer militias recruited from farmers and other civilians who had volunteered their time and money for the defense of California against Mexico’s aggression. From this event forward, military gifts would become an important part of local culture throughout the state of California! Volunteers donated everything from saddles and cannons to clothing and cooking supplies – anything that could be used in battle! In 1860, when Californication became a state, the government decided that it would be appropriate to equip its soldiers with firearms instead of just providing them with horses and clothes! The first year after Californication became a state saw an influx of new soldiers into our town – most everyone who contributed weaponry received a discount on products or services! This tradition continued through World War II when American servicemen returned home (and some brought home spouses!). These same discounts continue today as we remember those who have served our country!

Fortuna, California was the original home of the United States Army. The first U.S. military post in California was Fort Point on the San Francisco Peninsula in 1846. The U.S. Army moved its headquarters to San Francisco in 1861 and then to Sacramento in 1865. In 1867, the army established a base at Camp Lee near Fortuna, which served as an training ground for future infantry and cavalry officers. In 1915, General John J. Pershing designated Fortuna as the capital of California's new 16th Infantry Division (later known as I Corps). In 1916, General Pershing renamed Fortuna "Fort George" after his horse George Washington that had been killed during World War I and buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. The U SArmy decommissioned Fort George on September 2nd 1966 and it has since been used by local agencies such as city hall and fire departments
Fortuna is a small town in Sonoma County, California, located on the banks of the Napa River. The population was 5,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Santa Rosa–Napa Valley Metropolitan Statistical Area. Fortuna has an agricultural economy with a focus on wine production and tourism. Fortuna is founded by Franciscan monks in 1844 as a mission station called "San Francisco de las Fortunas". The name was changed to "Fortuna" in 1865 after a natural disaster destroyed most of the original village. "The townsite had been platted by James Meehan and others in 1839 but only became known to locals when he sold it to Jotham Bigelow for $1,000 in 1850." In 1865, gold was discovered near Fortuna and began flowing into the area; this led to increased development around the post office and school. In 1870-71, John Sutter traveled through Sonoma County during his Gold Rush expedition and found many new mines including Fortuna's first gold claim (Holloway). This discovery led to more miners coming to Fortuna looking for new wealth. In 1886-87 Father Pedro Gomez established a religious order called Fraternidad de Jesús en la Monterey which made provision for Native American housing within its walls. This helped create stability for native villages nearby and also motivated missionaries working among these tribes to come to see what they could learn from them about Christianity. Fraternidad de Jesús also built several churches in present day Santa Rosa while expanding its work into other areas of Northern California such as Petaluma and Yountville. Father Gomez passed away in 1907 but his order continued until 1931 when it merged with another similar order named Obispo Rivera y Salinas creating Holy Cross Missions Order Incorporated.. With Father Gomez' death came responsibility for running both orders under one roof until 1959 when they were reorganized into their current form as Missionaries of Jesus International Inc.. The community continues today with Prayerful Trustees who manage all aspects of finances and pastoral care around public schools, fire protection services, streetlights/pavements etc... To date there are over 1,500 brothers living worldwide under one common mischievous banner!

The population of Fortuna peaked at over 10,000 in the late 1920s and 1930s; however, this population decreased during the Great Depression as many people left for better opportunities in California. In 1948, Fortuna merged with other towns to form the City of Chico.
