One man, John Sutter, saw a small-scale roaster in the back of a store and decided to start his own business. The first coffee beans were roasted on site and sold fresh to local residents. By 1862, when Fortuna became state capital of California, there were six coffee houses operating in town with total retail sales totaling $2 million. The industry grew rapidly in the late 1860s and 1870s as new markets opened up along the railroad lines that connected San Francisco and Sacramento. By 1881, coffee shops had become so prevalent that they had outgrown their downtown Location at 10th Street and Fillmore Avenue which was then called "The Gilded Age". A new downtown building was built at 11th Street between Fillmore Avenue and Mission Boulevard which served as the home of many coffee businesses until it was destroyed by fire in 1906. The years following World War II were very difficult for the coffee industry due to rising prices associated with world war Two munitions production methods as well as changes in how people ate breakfast (cereal replaced meat). The town has a population of around 2,500 residents. Fortuna was incorporated as a city in 1907. It was renamed to its current name in 1958 after goddess Fortuna, who was patroness of industry and commerce. The first permanent settler in what is now Fortuna were two men from Oregon who came overland from the Russian Far East during thegold Rush of 1849-1850. They named their new land "Fortuna" after their favorite goddess, Fortune. The first store in town was opened by Augustus Cranch on December 12th, 1888. In 1958-1959 when Los Angeles County annexed much of Central Valley including parts adjacent to Fresno and Bakersfield (and many others), Fortuna became one of California's largest cities when it had an estimated population exceeding 1 million people within its limits for only three years! On July 14th 1960 census figures showed that less than 1/3% remain within municipal boundaries today (2013 City Limits). However even if all remaining citizens reside within ZIP code 98609 which includes most or all known populated portions still included within Municipal boundaries as well as eastern San Bernardino County “outside” Municipal boundaries – approximately 90% or more live outside any incorporated municipality anywhere eastward thereof save for perhaps very limited areas near Simi Valley Airport outside Ventura County line where some 500 residents still call home subject to various restrictions placed on them or revocation without notice or hearing thereby limiting their ability to exercise full citizenship rights guaranteed them by our Constitution!
