The Coast Guard in Fortuna, California was established on May 14, 1918. The Coast Guard Station at Fortuna was originally known as the Harbor Patrol. In 1941, the station became part of the United States Coast Guard and its name was changed to the present day Coast Guard Station at Fortuna. On December 21, 1941, Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and America entered World War II. The Coast Guard responded to the attack with a large mobilization effort. From 1942-1945, coast guard personnel served in various Pacific Theater commands including Guam; Saipan; Truk; Okinawa; Iwo Jima Island; and Kwajalein Atoll. During this time they provided emergency medical assistance to troops on land and sea. On September 11th, 1945, Japan surrendered and the war ended. The Coast Guard returned to civilian life with a new name - The United States CoastGuard - which it has held ever since. In 1951-1952, patrol vessels were built for the coastguard at Fort Point Loma in San Diego County and these boats continue to be used today by the coastguard as well as other law enforcement agencies throughout California. On January 15th, 1958 a new station was opened within gates of Fort Point Loma when Coastal Security Station Fortuna (CSSF) became operational under authorization from Headquarters U S Customs & Border Protection (CBP) Section 821(b)(1). CSSF's primary mission is maritime security support through operation of an incident response team capable of providing rapid search/rescue services in all types of emergencies involving vessels or people ashore or afloat anywhere along Californian waters outside territorial limits of any nation other than United States jurisdiction

In 1882, James H. Cook opened the first general store in what is now Fortuna. In 1907, A.H. Weisman added a grocery to his business and named it Weisman's Supermarket after his father-in-law who had founded that company in 1903 in nearbyOntario (now Simi Valley).
In 1916, Fred Laughlin opened the first hardware store in what is now Fortuna; he also operated a bakery on Main Street until he sold it to Ethel Laufman in 1945 and moved his family to Ontario that year.

A post office called "Fortuna" was established thereon on September 16th 1912 by Alfred Paine with mail arriving from Los Angeles via Stagecoach Lines Company < ref>Post Office Directory 1912. After World War I ended hostilities across international borders, goods reaching America through Mexico City increasingly became available for delivery through San Bernardino County due to increased traffic volume between those cities.UCSB Photo Archives - photograph album item number 8292. On October 3rd 1920 Paine filed for incorporation of a city under the name "Fortuna", but no action was taken until 1922 when Harry Wetherbee recommended that incorporation be approved upon closer examination of the proposed charter amendment which would have granted city rights to vote on all major issues facing its citizens – including property taxation and zoning regulations.< ref >City of Fortuna Incorporation Records 1911-1922. On January 2nd 1923 incorporation finally took place with Mayor John Hargrave becoming its first official headliner;
he had been elected unopposed as an Independent during November 1922 municipal election after serving two terms as mayor of neighbouringOntario (now Simi Valley).
On July 15th 1924 another milestone occurred when Wernher von Braun began working at his new accelerator plant located just east of town along State Route 12 while continuing research into space travel; soon thereafter orbital tests were being conducted here using equipment acquired from Redstone Arsenal.< br / >< br />It wasn't until 1969 when private funding enabled development of one such large project – creating three satellite towns around nine miles west of town near Interstate 5 – dubbed Corona del Mar Parkway Boulevard Communities LLC; these communities are still home today to over 10K residents according to 2016 census figures.< br / >< br />Satellite Town Halls continue today and serve as community centers where residents can access social services like housing counseling or mental health care without having to leave their homes!
