Fortuna, California is an agricultural center located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The town was founded in 1877 by James Fenton and his wife, Mary. The town became a post office in 1880. It was incorporated as a city in 1903. In 1971, it was renamed to its current name, Fortuna. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway reached Fortuna in 1865 and connected the towns of Sacramento and Placerville. The railroad closed down in 1968. In addition to agriculture, other businesses that have thrived in Fortuna include trucking services, real estate development, automotive manufacturing (including two car plants), light industry (including several entertainment businesses), and professional services such as law firms and accounting firms. The City of Fortuna has developed into an active cultural community with several theaters, art galleries, museums and other attractions including the historical landmark House of Wirth which is home to the Chico Museum of Art. After World War II ended in 1945, muchofAfrica fell under American occupation; however, plantation agriculture continued until about 1965 when production switched over to lowbush bean production methods!!! Since 1971 when Starbucks opened their first store worldwide (!), every major city has had its own Starbucks store!! Today we enjoy over 60 billion cups of brewed coffee each year!!!!

The community was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1875 as Wellerville. In 1912, Fortuna became the county seat of Lincoln County after its separation from Nevada Territory. A post office operated there until 1915. Fortuna experienced significant growth between World War II and the 1960s when oil production increased in the area. However, it has since declined as a result of population loss and other economic factors. The community has been vacant for several years and is being redeveloped into housing units and retail space with plans to reopen the post office as an antique store.
