In 1860, Fortuna became the capital of California when Sacramento was chosen as the state's new capital. The Earles donated land to build a city on their property and named it after them, Fortuna. The city grew slowly until 1907, when it exploded with growth due to its role in the Stock Exchange business community. In 1955, the city acquired additional land and renamed it Park Avenue after then-Mayor James Krantz Jr., who helped make it one of the most vibrant cities in California. Fortuna is a census-designated place in Fresno County, California. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. Fortuna has been governed by a six-member city council since 1912. It is located on the banks of the San Joaquin River and is adjacent to Fresno and Merced Counties. In 1865, prospectors discovered gold near present-day Fortuna while working in what is now Merced County. A group of men from Stockton set up a small town nearby called Gold Mines until 1871 when they abandoned it due to lack of gold ore. In 1872, Mark Hopkinson founded the first post office in what is now Fortuna with four letters: M H O W S T O N . The first store opened in 1870 and was run by Jno. Bigham & Co., which also served as the first school teacher (1870). By 1875, there were 10 stores and 7 businesses in town including two newspapers: The Sentinel (1875) and The Californian (1876). By 1880, there were 24 stores and 10 businesses with an population of 1,200. A sawmill was built on the riverbank about 1900 for processing logs into lumber; it closed around 1950 because of overuse by residents and competition from larger mills upstream. After years of decline and redevelopment efforts by local officials starting in the early 1990s little progress has been made to revive Fortuna since then other than some renovation work at its municipal hall which reopened on October 11th 2006 after being vacant for several years. One goal for revitalization plans should be to bring back some original shops/stores along with an agricultural market so that farming activities can take center stage once again within this community
