Fortuna is a small town in California, located about 25 miles northeast of San Francisco on the Peninsula. It was founded by Spanish settlers in 1821, and was named for the goddess Fortuna. In 1848, it became part of Mexico City, and since then has been an American city. The earliest mention of Fortuna comes from 1692 when José de Urrea y Arroyo noted that there were two villages near modern-day Fortuna called Villa de la Venda and La Cueva Negro (the black cave). The name Fortuna likely derives from the Latin phraseFortuna est pacificus or "Fortunate is peaceable". In 1821, Mexican colonists established what would become known as Rancho Gutierrez in present-day southern Santa Clara County. Pedro Gutiérrez purchased land east of Coyote Creek and built a cabin on it in 1824. He named his new rancho after his late wife's maiden name which he had acquired while serving as captain of cavalry at Mexico City during the Mexican War of Independence. In 1850, Rancho Gutierrez was sold to José Antonio Naranjo y Sánchez who renamed it Rancho Los Angeles. From here began one of California's most successful cattle drives with over 1 million head delivered between 1850 and 1860 alone. In 1862, post office hours were changed from 10 am to 4 pm to coincide with opening times for cattle drives which continued until just before World War II when they were shifted back to 10 am because so much time was spent driving across country that morning! Because Of this success Rancho Los Angeles declined into obscurity until Tom Waddell purchased it in 1978along with other parts of Santa Clara County including Menlo Park
