Fortuna, California is a small town located in the Mono County of California. It was founded in 1849 by Mormon pioneers and named for Mount Fortunatus, an 8,500 foot peak that overlooks the town. The post office was established in 1851. The population of Fortuna peaked at 2,700 in 1920 but has since declined to around 1,000 today. Fortuna has a rich history dating back to the late 1800s. A number of businesses were founded here during that time including a millinery shop and restaurant called the Fortunate Maidens and a bakery called Mrs. Kapp’s Bakery & Cafe. In 1908, local doctor Augustus Beale donated land to build what is now the Beale-Fortuna Community Hospital and today it remains one of the most important healthcare facilities in the area. The community also played an important role during World War II as manufacturing plants sprang up here to produce munitions for America's war effort. Afterward, many people left Fortuna for more opportunities elsewhere in Northern California or beyond due to economic stagnation and lack of progressivism within Mono County after World War II . However, some notable residents from Fortuna include sculptor Don Richman and entrepreneur Norm Rice who both went on to become successful entrepreneurs outside of mono county limits
Fortuna, California was founded in 1876 by Captain John S. Griggs as the town of Fortuna on the banks of the Sacramento River. The name derived from a fortuneteller's prediction that a wagonload of gold would be discovered in this area. A post office was established at Fortuna in 1878 and operations were originally conducted out of the home of Mrs. Bancroft. In 1886, a group of investors led by Capt. Griggs purchased 320 acres (12 ha) east of present-day downtown Fortuna to establish what became known as the Griggs Ranch. By 1907, there were over 100 residents living in Fortuna and it had acquired its own telephone system and began to become an agricultural center with crops such as cotton, hay, potatoes, and citrus fruits being grown. In 1916, local entrepreneur Alfred Cramer donated land for what is now downtown Fortuna Park which included a water tower and football stadium which served as both civic and military grounds during World War I. The park also features a number of historic buildings including the old courthouse built in 1865 and additions made during various phases of its history including those associated with Mayor James Phelan (1921-27), Lieutenant Governor Goodwin Coleman (1928-32), Supervisor Harry Weyer (1934-41), Jr.(1945-49), Mayor William Jaffe(1950-54), former Supervisor Dutch Schultz (1965-) In 1949, Interstate 80 was completed through central California providing new transportation opportunities for people living in areas surrounding San Francisco Bay Area cities such as Oakland, Berkeley, Concord/Fremont/Davis etc., making Fortuna an important industrial center located near major highways
