The Fortuna Naval Station has been a naval installation in the area since World War II. It is one of the largest navy installations in California and it has a large arsenal, including two submarines and four destroyer boats. In 1957, the California Maritime Commission acquired five vessels from the British Admiralty (Fortuna-1 through 4) for use by the state's Coast Guard. Thevessels were originally used to transport goods between ports on Long Beach Peninsula and Ventura County. They were decommissioned in 1972 but were reactivated as part of an effort to build up the state's maritime capability during the 1970s and 1980s. Navy Deployment History in Fortuna The first ship deployed at Fortuna was USS "Aurora" which arrived on November 7, 1942. This ship was part of Operation Torch which transported U.S forces into Europe to help defeat Nazi Germany. She served with distinction until she was decommissioned on October 5, 1945 at Alameda Naval Shipyard after serving as flagship of Destroyer Squadron Fifteen (Detachment One). USS "Aurora" had been delivered by General Motors Corporation under a US Navy Matson contract #8172G-41 dated December 8, 1941; she had been built at James River Corp., Richmond, VA under a United States Navy hull number YO-798/44 and christened USS "Aurora". On May 25, 1944, she reached Mediterranean Sea via Alexandria Canal before completing Departure from harbor on July 3rd along with USS "Plymouth", USS "Chesapeake", USS "Alaska", USS "Dolphin" patrols antisubmarine warfare exercises off Benghazi Harbor Libya during August 1944 en route to Taranto Strait where they relieved escort vessels for Mine Warfare Cruise#3 in September 1944 convoying supplies to Allied Forces fighting against Nazi Germany off southern Italy from October 24th - November 2nd weather permitting rescued more than 1,500 Allied servicemen who had fallen victim to minesweeping operations during that period! After providing cover for departed transports while transiting Strait of Messina late October 1944 they joined task group TG 58 breaking out of Malta waters and arriving opposite Tunisian coast on November 9th escorting convoys moving reinforcements reinforcements back to Southern France following Liberation of Paris this operation resulted in direct participation by Fletcher class destroyers McAllister (DD 521), Jenkinson (DD 522), Riddle (DD 529) & Wainwright(DD 530)

Fortuna, California is a small town located in Central Valley of California. It was founded in 1887 by James W. Hird and his wife, Emma Hird. The town has a population of 4,717 as of the 2010 census. The community is named after the goddess Fortuna. The first post office in Fortuna was established on November 15, 1887. In 1906, the name of the first school was changed to Pacific Union School District #1 when it became part of the larger Donner divided school district system that same year. In 1916, Fortuna had its own fire department which continued until 1934 when it merged with Donner Fire Department #2. In 1957, Fortuna consolidated with other Central Valley towns including Pleasanton and Dublin to form what would become known as the Central Valley Metropolitan Area (CVM). The CVM included all settlements east of Interstate 580 within its boundaries and generally stretched from Placer County north to Sacramento County westward to Yucca Valley and south to San Bernardino County eastward into Kern County. Today, Fortuna is an agricultural center with a significant number of industries including grazing for beef cattle and hay production; manufacturing such as gasoline pumps and die cast metal parts; wholesaling food products such as candy bars and vegetables; service sectors such as trucking services; agriculture research facilities; and a few dozen retail businesses catering primarily to farmers market customers or specialty consumers who prefer locally grown produce or artisanal goods not found at mainstream grocery stores
