On January 17, 1945, shelled by retreating Japanese forces at Iwo Jima during the Battle of Okinawa, she finally surrendered after spending more than two years afloat. In 1957, when Fortuna became an incorporated city, it named its first naval ship - USS Enterprise (CVN 63) - after the city's only victory in WWII. The ship still resides at Naval Base Fortuna and is used for ceremonies and events related to civic pride.

Fortuna, California is a small town located in the Mojave Desert of Southern California. The population was 2,711 at the 2010 census. Fortuna is known for its hot springs and as the home of Rodeo Drive. The community began as a farming village on the east side of Fortuna Lake. In 1886, a group of farmers from nearby Garden City founded what is now called Fortuna Hot Springs Village on land that had been used by their predecessors for gathering water and grazing animals. Today, the village has grown to include more than 100 residences and businesses. In 1912, Fortuna became an incorporated city with a population of 5,000 people. The city's first mayor was Harry Sennett. during World War I, when much of southern California was under military occupation, Fortuna Mayor John Hickey supervised the distribution of food to military troops stationed in nearby Yucca Valley. In 1922, after voters approved annexation by Los Angeles County, Fortuna became an official city with its own police department and fire department. Today, tourism accounts for about 60% of municipal revenue while traditional agriculture continues to play a major role in local economy; two-thirds of all jobs in the village are related to agriculture or ranching operations

Fortuna is a small town in Butte County, California, United States. It was founded in 1879 by James H. Hostetter and his family as a sheep ranch. In 1902, the town was renamed to honor Fortunato #1 della Rovere, Count of Gravina (14th century Italian general). The count's coat of arms features an olive tree with a human foot protruding from its trunk. Fortunato's father had also been named James H. Hostetter Sr., and his brother John W. Hostetter ran the ranch until their deaths in 1951 and 1964 respectively. The first store in Fortuna opened on Main Street in 1879, when two brothers named John Wirth opened the business at 3rd and Main Streets respectively. By 1901, the Store had moved to 4th and Main Streets under new ownership; it remained there until 1902 when it was sold to Jens Pohlman who renamed it "Pohlman's". The store operated under that name for about 20 years before it changed hands again and became "Jenny's" which operated until 1984 when it closed down due to lack of customers. In 2002, Jenny's descendants reopened the store as "Fortuna Grill & Market", which still operates today. On July 10, 1881 - just one year after incorporation - Fortuna voters elected William Ladd as mayor against incumbent Nathaniel Willard Goodwin Sr.. He served two terms before being replaced by George Washington Phillips Jr.. After Ladd left office in 1886, Mayor James Mapes took over but resigned due to ill health less than a year later on October 21st while serving out his full term limits set by law- he would not be able to run for re-election because he had already died less than six months earlier on November 12th at age 85 years old (he would have been 91 years old if he were still alive). On January 2nd of 1889 then-Mayor George Washington Phillips Jr., succeeded Mapes with no challengers received enough signatures required for election within the 120 day period mandated by state law for such decisions...Phillips served one term before resigning due to illness on February 14th having lost majority support from both Democrats and Republicans in City Council during spring session 1890...He would die only days later at home after suffering from pneumonia aggravated by stress brought on by political pressure from Govt officials seeking recognition for Butte Valley Railroad project...Municipal Clerk Julius Auerbach filled out nomination papers petitionsing electors not included among those originally elected sheriff or treasurer following Clear Creek Gold Rush boundary changes approved Dec 6 1889 creating unincorporated area east of present day Castaic Lake including parts now located within city limits did not sign any petitions nominating him nor did any other candidate nominated pursuant to resolution passed Feb 14 1890 setting forth requirements for nomination process....Auerbach lived close enoughto vote but never exercised that right...Phillips remains Orphaned relative today who resides at home caring for him along with mother since she died several years ago
