Foster City, California is an incorporated city in San Mateo County, California. The population was 29,569 at the 2010 census. It is located on the east side of San Francisco Bay. Foster City was founded by brothers Elias and John Foster in 1887 as a small farming town named after their family's home farm in Scotland. In 1908, it became part of the newly created City of San Francisco. The city annexed nearby Soquel in 1966 and then Hayward in 1988. The current mayor is London Breed. The original location for Foster City was on the north shore of Donner Lake just below where Highway 1 crossed from Santa Clara County to San Mateo County (now Interstate 280). In 1887, brothers Elias and John Foster bought land near present-day Foster City from Juan Bautista Alvarado for $1 per acre (almost $40 per square foot today). They built a cabin and started farming the land which they named "FosterCity". By 1908, they had outgrown their initial plot of land and decided to move their settlement to what is now downtown Foster City. They arrived with four wagons full of goods that included flour, milk, biscuit mix, bacon, eggs, cheese and other groceries! Downtown Foster City's first store was opened in 1911 by Elihu Rootes Sr., father of entrepreneur Hargrave Rootes Sr.: Roots Store & Cafe (). A post office moved into the building – first called "Hague", then "FosterCity Post Office" – in 1912. Due to rapid growth during World War I (1914-18), Streetcar Lines #1/6 reached downtown from Daly Plaza via Grant Avenue; so there was no need for a post office inside downtown Foster City until 1926 when Streetcar Lines #1/6 connected downtown with Market Street via Second Street (). In 1916 streetcars stopped running between Daly Plaza and Market Street because of expansion at Candlestick Park; however streetcars continued operating between 2nd Street & Toole Avenue throughout Prohibition (. As this happened many businesses along 2ndStreet closed down) but reopened once prohibition ended on December 15th 1920 due to election results being too close to call (). Thereafter streetcars were used less frequently until they were discontinued completely by BART in 1943 (); streetcar lines ran again between 2ndStreet & Geary Boulevard starting January 3rd 1949 effective with Municipal Railway line Streetscar days which continue until present day . Eventually most retail businesses closed down or changed hands over time as more people moved into newer cities or towns around Silicon Valley; however one business that stayed open through all these changes was Mrs Katz's Kosher Bakery which continues unchanged today (and has been doing so since 1922) - next door to Joe's Pizza! During WWII both local military services recruited men from FosterCity who worked at various munitions plants across Northern California; however only women were allowed into these plants so few women actually served during WWII (. Women did serve afterwards within various auxiliary activities such as Red Cross etc.). After cessation of hostilities local men returned home or took jobs elsewhere while women took up new opportunities within local families;; however Mrs Katz's Kosher Bakery still remains open today (& serves breakfastucha every morning!) typical Mark Twain quote about his birthplace: ". . .I never went there [Foster City] but I've heard tell it had high ceilings."

However, in 1968 the city annexes Haight-Ashbury which had been part of Berkeley since 1949. This annexation increased the size of FosterCity by more than 25%. Since then, FosterCity has experienced rapid growth through both annexation and development within its boundaries - currently it has a population over 150K+. Many famous landmarks have been built or are being developed in this vibrant community including Googleplex (of course), Facebook’s Menlo Park Campus (just east off Second Street), Twitter’s first headquarters (#1 Polk St.), Toyota’s $100M factory complex on Geary Boulevard between First Street & Third Street – just southwest OF Civic Center BART Station (!), Apple’s new campus on Mission Bay across from Financial District BART Station!
