Since the early days of coffee, Foster City has been a center for the art and science of coffee. The first documented coffee production in California took place in 1846, when Peter Cooper imported African beans from Africa to sell at his store in San Francisco. In 1847, James Peet started roasting beans on his family's plantation in Foster City. By 1850, many small farmers had moved into the area and began growing coffee. In 1907, Foster City became an incorporated town with a population of over 50,000 people. The city council decided to start a program that would provide free roasted coffee to residents every morning. This was the beginning of what is now known as "The Coffee Program." During World War II, Foster City was occupied by Japan and saw significant destruction. However, because of its strategic location near Los Angeles and Ventura County, the city continued to grow during the war years and became one of the most important commercial centers for coffee in California. Today, Foster City is home to more than 100 businesses that produce or process coffee including several large roasters such as Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts.

Foster City is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 24,831 at the 2010 census and it is the eighth-largest city in California. It is home to the University of California, Berkeley. The downtown area has been designated a historic district by the city government.
Foster City is a city located in San Joaquin County, California. The population was 25,814 at the 2010 census. Foster City is part of the Fresno-Madera, CA Metropolitan Statistical Area and it is also included in the Sacramento–Arden-Arcade-San Joaquin Combined Statistical Area. The city covers an area of 9 square miles (23 km²). Foster City was founded on July 6, 1879 by A.P. Hill and named for his brother George Washington Foster who had settled there two years earlier. By 1901, Foster City had a population of 20,000 people and was the most populous city in San Joaquin County. In 1916, when San Francisco became a city and Cedar Rapids became its second incorporated town, Foster City lost its status as an unincorporated community within San Joaquin County but retained its own government with a mayor and five council members. On July 1st of that year, the last vestige of local autonomy ended when incorporation into the larger city took effect. During World War II Foster City served as one of three cities located in service areas designated for military housing because they were adjacent to major ammunition production plants operated by General Motors Corporation and other Allied war producers. In 1948 all three cities reverted back to their original functions as unincorporated communities within SanJoaquin County after reaffirming their commitment to each other during wartime bond sales overseen by then county supervisor Don Armstrong; today these same commitments are still held by both cities despite their growing populations which have led to new development around them The current downtown core developed about 1960s when architect designed "Lone Star" style commercial buildings surrounding large parkland including: John F Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum; United States Grant High School; Northgate Shopping Center; Slauson Park golf course; Wilson Avenue Baptist Church which now houses the First Baptist Church of Fresno In addition some newer developments include: Chubb Insurance Company Headquarters Building - anchored by Art Deco styled tower - since built 2009 housed inside former post office building completed in 2006Smart Home Arena - home arena for various types of tournaments featuring professional athletes started construction in early 2017

In 1824, José Bonifácio de Sousa founded a small plantation near Curitiba that produced 100 kilograms (220 pounds) of pure Brazilian shot-roasted coffee each year. The coffee became very well known throughout Europe and America for its high-quality product. In 1938, Howard Schultz opened his first Starbucks location in Seattle’s Pioneer Square. He began producing and selling roasted whole bean Indonesian Coffee from his own roastery in suburban Portland, Oregon. Soon after, other stores followed suit across North America. The city has been called "the cultural and commercial center of the East Bay Area" for many years and today ranks as one of the most culturally diverse cities in America. Foster City's rich history goes back to 1847 when John Galt founded Foster City Rancho Adobe on land that now includes much of downtown Foster City. In 1853, James K. Polk assigned Russian-born Nicholas Norkin to purchase some 640 acres (246 hectares) around what are now Mission Dolores and Third streets from José Pereira de Alvarado near Yerba Buena Cove for $10 per acre ($2 million at current prices). Upon Norkin's death in 1865, his wife Anna passed the property along to their son Nicholas Jr., who had married her sister Maria Félix de los Angeles y Castro before she died in 1868. After Mrs. Norkin's death, it passed through several hands until it was purchased by developer George Hearst in 1907 for $1 million from his father-In-law Henry Durant and others including Leland Stanford Sr.. Hearst quickly turned Foster City into one of San Francisco's most affluent neighborhoods with large mansions built by its wealthy residents on wide avenues lined with palm trees. However, during World War II Foster City became an important dumping ground for Japanese Americans interned during the war in concentration camps located nearby at SFO Air Field (now McClellan Air Force Base). This forced urban growth away from downtown which eventually caused severe problems for transportation and access to essential services such as education, health care, jobs and retail stores throughout the city center despite efforts by city officials to keep these areas connected via public transportation systems like BART or Muni bus lines. In 1976 pressure from a group led by then Mayor Dianne Feinstein led to passage of Proposition 13 which limits property values within certain boundaries while allowing developers more leeway in constructing high-rise housing developments adjacent to schools or other civic centers within strict limits set forth by state law instead of just around residential streets like Foster City did prior to Prop 13."
