The city of Foster City was established in 1875 as a small ranch community on the San Francisco Peninsula. The first post office in the city was opened in 1876. In 1902, the City of Foster City merged with the neighboring town of Milpitas to form a new municipality. The merger resulted in the addition of a third ward which later became known as South Foster City. In 1924, southern Foster City annexed part of Rancho Seco and became incorporated as that township's own city. On December 6, 1941, during World War II, Foster City was bombed by Japanese bombers and sustained extensive damage including loss of life and destruction of property. The bombings ended what would be an almost continuous bombing campaign against American cities by Japan until 1945.
