Foster City is a city located in San Francisco, California. The population was 80,000 as of the 2010 census. It is the fourth-largest city in San Francisco County and the largest city east of San Francisco. At 1,815 square miles (3,355 km2), it is also one of the most populous cities in Northern California. The first Europeans to visit Foster City were missionaries working with the Spanish Mission Dolores on February 17, 1846. After Mission Dolores was evacuated by Mexico in 1848, settlers began arriving by wagon train from Stockton and other settlements around Sacramento. On October 25, 1851, a group of thirteen Californians founded what would become Foster City after they sold land they had bought near where today's Market Street and Geary Boulevard stand. In November 1850 Harry Wigglesworth arrived from Boston with his family to purchase some land northeast of downtown for $5 per acre (sq ft). He named his new community "Foster" after his late father Benjamin Foster who had helped organize the First Baptist Church there in 1838. By 1860 Foster City had 5 churches and 100 residents. In 1865 Anthony Barnes erected a large frame schoolhouse on present day Third Street which served as a meeting place for early civic meetings and other local activities until destroyed by fire in 1916 arsonist efforts that damaged many nearby businesses including Barnes' bakery business which he rebuilt within weeks following the fire - Ben Barnes Elementary School still stands to this day! The town grew rapidly duringalesfter Gold Rush days when prospectors flocked to its fertile soil for gold discoveries before departing for mines further north or south of the Bay Area outside today's Daly City or Berkeley areas respectively due to tough competition for deposits along Highway 101 between Sacramento and Fillmore Counties hostile terrain making transportation difficult as well as high costs associated with extracting gold nuggets from hardpan and sandstone formations; much like today's Sonoma County! As more people arrived into what was then unincorporated Fosterville Township boundaries those living nearest military installations such as Fort Point Naval Base on Treasure Island became increasingly anxious about possible attacks by Native American tribes led by Chief Manuelito while others prospered economically due partly theretoably increased demand for goods exported back home via ferry service across Bay Bridge Strait; an important route linking inland markets with export terminals on Angel Island Ferry Terminal bringing goods ashore enabling entrepreneurs such as John Doheny & Co., founding owners of Southern Pacific Railway Company (SP) to flourish! I n addition to its economic success, Foster City has seen several changes over time that have contributed to its unique character including: -The first post office opened in 1886 and served as a stop on stagecoaches between Stockton and North Park; -Foster City saw its first music festival in 1914 when it hosted the Agricultural Fair; -In 1922–23 an electric streetcar system called "the green line" ran through town making it possible for people to get around without having to walk; -During World War II an arsenal was built adjacent to what is now Pioneer Square just off US 101 close to where Interstate 5 meets I Street SW; -After World War II most of the manufacturing activity left Foster City while some services continued such as trucking and printing until they too departed during the 1970s recession; -Downtown business owners pushed for redevelopment after city leaders decided not to pursue any new taxes specifically related thereto following Proposition 13 which passed during 1976 general election; -In 1984 downtown became home once again (after being vacated for many years)to various arts organizations before becoming predominantly used as a nightlife district known today as Mission Valley
