Foster City is a city located in San Mateo County, California, United States. The population was 97,526 at the 2010 census. It is part of Silicon Valley and the South Bay region of Northern California. Foster City was founded by John Sutter in 1876 as a small farming town on land he had acquired from the Hetch Hetchy Company. After a fire destroyed most of his crops in 1881, Sutter rebuilt his farm and named it Foster City after himself and his wife, Sarah Jane Foster. The first post office was opened in 1884. In 1950, Foster City became an annex of San Francisco. The city has since regained its independent status and is known for its arts and cultural scene, blue-collar jobs during the early days of the electronics industry, and its large number of high-technology companies and startups. The city's name comes from John Sutter's purchase of 2,500 acres (1 km2) northeast of what is now Foster City from the Hetch Hetchy Company for $5 per acre (0.24 ha). He named it "Foster" because he found two water holes there which would meet offshore to create a pond that could be used for irrigation purposes; this property still forms much of downtown Foster City today. In 1881–1882 when Sutter rebuilt his farm on this property after being burned down by fire some years earlier – one can see evidence that he may have been inspired to name his new community "Foster" by their location – it seems likely that he chose that name because it would echo back to him those words spoken by President James Kaguya about how pleased they were with their gift to America: "It should not be so long before we have another place called 'Foster' or 'Sutter'.
