In 1923, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf moved its headquarters from San Francisco to Foster City due to the popularity of the city. As downtowns around the country grew more vibrant and commercialized, Foster City slowly caught up and became one of the most important caffeine hubs in America by the early 21st century. By 2003, The Benares Corporation had taken over Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf which led to a period where both businesses operated under one roof until 2008 when they separate again. Today, many locals consider Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf their "roots" company while Benares Corporation is considered an artisanal roaster/bakery division that produces high-quality coffee products such as donuts and croissants

Foster City is a city in San Francisco County, California, United States. The population was 37,651 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in San Francisco and the seventh-largest city in California. Foster City was founded on April 12, 1887 by John Witter and his brother Charles Foster. The name of the original town site had been chosen as part of a bet between two friends--Witter and local banker George Jones—on who could name the first post office in the new town. The name "Foster City" was chosen because it resembled land that had once been owned by James Fenton Foster, one of San Francisco's early settlers. In 1892, Foster City became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and four council members. The downtown area has undergone many changes over its history including becoming a center for culture and commerce during 19th century Gold Rush days; being a working class residential neighborhood during World War II; becoming an upscale cultural destination during the 1990s through its inclusion in Mayor Willie Brown's "FixIt SF" program; and finally experiencing rapid gentrification throughout the 2000s as result of increasing business activity and population growth within walking distance of downtown sidewalks. Today, much of what once characterized downtown Foster City as run down or blighted is now thriving districts known for their art galleries, trendy restaurants, nightlife venues and large housing projects completed in recent years such as SoMa (South Park) district which has seen significant revitalization efforts spearheaded by Mayor Ed Lee
