In Fountain Valley, California, the Coast Guard is a vital part of the community. The Coast Guard has been providing law and order on and off the coast since 1892. This history dates back to when Captain George Sutter founded the first lighthouse in San Diego County. The Coast Guard has grown over time and now patrols 1,000 miles of coastline from Point Loma to Santa Barbara County. Today, the Coast Guard operates 16 stations across California including four in Fountain Valley: North Beach, Wishram Marina, Huntington Beach Pier and Shelter Point Marina. These stations provide services such as rescue operations, maritime security, environmental monitoring and anti-drug enforcement. Some examples include a 1942 World War II era bomber USS Enterprise (CVN-65) which was donated to Coastal Command; an American flag pole that flew over Harbor Blvd., Seal Beach after being damaged by a storm; a 1957 Ford Pinto which was gifted to Parks Department; two pairs of tickets for a performance at Balboa Park - one given away free with purchase of admission while another pair went up for auctioneer bidding; three sets of binoculars - one given away free with purchase at souvenir store while another pair went up for bidding at auctions held during Fleet Week; an inflatable dinghy donated to Recreation & Parks Department by Navy Sailor John Kappes after his wife's death...the list goes on! A numberof items have been brought back into use or donation following their new home among member sailors stationed aboard naval vessels or NAS Seal Beach - many thanks go out to Petty Officer 2nd Class Cory Lunsford who recently brought back memories of donating an old lifejackets locker onto board USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN-73) post-Katrina! Today's Coast Guard gift history is significant not only because it showcases how community involvement can lead to valuable assets becoming available to those who need them most but also because it underscores just how much we all owe this nation and its military veterans!

The Coast Guard has been providing aid and assistance to the citizens of the United States since 1790. The modern Coast Guard was established on February 1, 1947 as a merger of the United States Life-Saving Service and the Revenue Cutter Service. The Coast Guard has evolved over time to meet the needs of today’s maritime community. Some of the more famous gifts given by the Coast Guard have included a helicopter, an icebreaker, a cutter, a plane and now an unmanned aircraft system (UUAS). These days, it is hard to find someone who isn’t familiar with one or more of these technologies that have played a significant role in helping keep our country safe. Here are some brief descriptions about each: Helicopter: helicopters first began being used by the Coast Guards in 1951 when they purchased their first chopper. This helicopter was called HC-2A “Pegasus” and quickly became one of our most popular assets due its comfortable seating for both crew and passengers and its ability to fly at high altitudes. Today, there are many different types of helicopters available for purchase from the Coast Guard including CH-46 Chinooks, MH-60 Black Hawks and Pave Hawk helicopters; all which play an important role in keeping our coastline clean and secured from ship traffic. Ice Breaker: The first icebreakers were built by private individuals in response to President Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal program during World War II. After years of research and development, Congress passed legislation authorizing construction of two new classes of icebreakers—the LST(L) 901(C) “Concorde” class which was delivered between 1961-1964 while also authorizeing procurement of six additional vessels—the LST(L) 1027(D), LST(L) 1028(E), LST(L) 1029(F), LST(L) 103R/C “Queen Elizabeth class” which were delivered between 1965-1969 after being ordered from Los Angeles Shipyards Incorporated (LASI). All six ships received specialized equipment for operations nearshore such as air conditioning, radar detection systems, sonar detection systems etc., making them ideal candidates for missions such as search Andresen Strait during winter months when navigation is difficult due to heavy ice cover. From 1966 until 1978 only three vessels made it into service with various modifications including better engines (including those used on HMCS Prince Edward Island), new superstructure design (mostly aft deckhouses similar to those seen on larger commercial ships today), addtionald sonars & buoyancy compensating devices (BCDs) & anti-submarine warfare nets but no dedicated mission ever occurred as funding ran out & all three vessels were sold off within 5 years after arriving at theirported ports without ever use! Today there are several different types available including Arctic Charters model RIBs used primarily off Alaska coast; Coastal Craft - multimission craft that can search multiple areas simultaneously like MH-60 Black Hawks; Long Range Anti Submarine Warfare Ships USNS Reuben Hurd (LHD 619); & Fast Assault Craft USNS Alaskan Sunfish (FCV 255)—all which play an important role in keeping our coastline clean and secured from ship traffic while still providing emergency relief capability if needed! All told there have been over 50 Type I&II Icebreakers built throughout history with most currently serving active duty pending retirement or replacement through 2040!!! Fountain Valley was founded in 1887 by James H. Fountain and his wife, Ida. The town is located on the east side of the San Joaquin River, about three miles north of Modesto. In 1901, the town was renamed for George Washington Carver, who had been instrumental in developing agriculture in central California. The city's first post office opened in 1902. In 1916, the United States Congress passed a bill authorizing construction of a dam on the San Joaquin River to create Lake Merritt. The city got its first street name, Carver avenue, in honor of Carver's contributions to Fountain Valley. In 1951, two brothers named Dick and Bob Peterson bought land west of downtown from James H. Fountain for $8 million. They built what is now known as Peterson park and developed it into one of the most popular areas in Fountain Valley. In 1978, they sold their share in the park to their nephews Rick and Ken Peterson for an estimated $27 million. Today, Rick and Ken Peterson are still owners and operators of Peterson Park
