The coffee industry began in Fountain Valley in 1875 when two Italian immigrants, Giovanni and Rosalba Neri, planted coffee beans on what is now known as South Street. In 1912, Federico Appiani founded an Italian grocery store in Fountain Valley which became one of the largest in the area. The first Starbucks opened up shop in 1984 in a small shopping center off of Broadway Drive. The coffee chain has since grown to over 1,500 stores worldwide with more than 62% growth from 2007-2010 alone! Fountain Valley's rich history can be found throughout its buildings and neighborhoods. One of the most important landmarks located within walking distance of Fountain Valley are the Cafeteria Towers – built back during World War II as military barracks for Air Force pilots and their families. The Fountain Valley Unified School District has 11 schools serving pupils from pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade, including two high schools: Fountain Valley West High School and Fountain Valley East High School. At Fairfield Coffee Company, they pioneered whole bean coffee production and introduced milk frothers and other innovations which helped make their coffee world renowned. In 1971, they merged with Starbucks Corporation to form Starbucks Incorporated. In 2006, Starbucks Corporation announced its intention to divest itself of all assets withinast United States operations including cafes and tea shops across America (except Seattle) pursuant to Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings initiated by leveraged buyout bidder JAB Capital LLC. Fountain Valley is a small town in the Central California desert located on the edge of the Antelope Valley. The community was founded in 1887 by John Wesley Powell and his wife, Mary Dodge. It became a census-designated place (CDP) in 1950 and has since grown to over 1,000 residents. The first people to live in what is now Fountain Valley were Paiute natives who hunted game near the present day Mather Reservoir. In 1887, John Wesley Powell and his wife, Mary Dodge, settled here after backpacking through much of California. They named their new settlement Fountain Valley after a local stream that they found while exploring the area. After years of development, including construction of roads and a post office, Fountain Valley reached its peak population around 1920 when it had over 100 residents. However, during World War II many residents left for military service because of the shortage of food in Southern California. By 1949 however the population had decreased to 50 due largely to immigration from other parts of America. As part of efforts to revitalize downtown Fountain Valley, City Manager Don Brennen created an alleyway called "The Alley" which runs between Main Street and Seventh Street. The alley became home to artist studios and nightlife until it was closed down by city officials in 2006 for fear that it would become a dumping ground for debris from nearby businesses which were being renovated at that time. Despite having declining populations throughout most of the 1990s and 2000s due to various reasons such as HIV/AIDS medication shortages within San Bernardino County or job losses within American Weighing Co., Fountain Valley managed to maintain some level of stability through 2007 thanks in part to periodic budget shortfalls set by then Mayor Fortunato Lopez Jr.. However this changed when City Councilmember Bill Gatto successfully petitioned then-City Manager Don Brennen for permissionTo demolish several aging buildings adjacent To Main Street which housed many small businesses that had been struggling with increasing competition from larger business owners throughout Downtown San Bernardino County In response To this request And vote Gatto obtained $225K FROM THE COUNTY BUDGET TO REPLACE THESE BUSINESSES WITH A NEW BAR AND LOUNGE DOWNTOWN FOUNTAIN VALLEY CITY HALL." This project has seen strong opposition from many neighborhood association members who feel that new parking structures will replace their longtime favorite places to eat out and drink coffee inside their homes - something they have spent generations building up without receiving any compensation . 0 0
