Fountain Valley is a small town located in Riverside County, California. It was settled by the Kumeys in 1868, and became part of the city of Riverside in 1907. The military has been in Fountain Valley for over seventy years. The first military deployment to Fountain Valley was on March 6, 1945 when United States Marines landed at San Clemente Island to supportOperation Neptune's Spear. The next deployment was on July 3, 1954 when United States Air Force planes flew over Corona to drop propaganda leaflets. On May 25, 1958, United States Marine Corps helicopters brought supplies and equipment to the village of Cahuenga Heights after it had been destroyed by fire. On October 12, 1962, during Operation Hard Bottom II, American forces landed at Menifee Point Naval Air Station for a two-week stay before continuing their voyage northward. In 1969–1970 the US Army conducted combat operations against Viet Cong rebels near La Mesa Dam which left nine people dead and thirty-six injured. In 1984–1985 troops from First Battalion Combat Team 1st Marines fought an all-out battle against insurgents within Tay Ninh National Park; this operation resulted in thirteen enemy casualties and one Marine killed or missing in action (KIA). The last military engagement occurred on November 26th 1988 when members of the III Battalion 2nd Marines responded to an emergency call reporting that a civilian bus had run off the road into a ravine outside Oficina del Arroyo Canyon National Monument. On December 5th 1988 two marines were killed while restaging an evacuation plan after heavy rains caused flooding inside Sector 10 Camp Aguinaldo; this event is known as "Rinconada". Today there are no active deployments taking place within Fountain Valley but there are Reserve Guard units stationed here should any need arise such as natural disasters or other emergencies
